Job description

Pre-Employment Requirements Employment is contingent upon successful completion of all applicable pre-employment screenings and verification of eligibility to work in the United States, in accordance with applicable laws, civil service rules, and collective bargaining agreements. GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES The Assistant City Attorney is responsible for performing professional legal work on behalf of the City, its officials, and its employees. DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES Conducts criminal, civil, and administrative litigation, on behalf of the City and its officials/employees, before local, state, and federal courts/agencies, including engaging in discovery, motion practice, trial, and appeals.

Reviews and authorizes or denies criminal complaints and warrants (including on periodic weekends virtually). Drafts and or reviews pleadings, motions, contracts, ordinances, resolutions, and other legal documents. Tracks important dates into software for civil, criminal, appeals and other proceedings.

Provides legal advice and training to assigned City officials and employees. Attends meetings of City boards and commissions as legal counsel as assigned. Reviews, investigates, and processes Freedom of Information Act requests, damage claims, and internal complaints.

Establish and maintain effective working relationships with court personnel, other City officials and employees, opposing counsel, and the general public. Performs related work as required. KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES: 1.

Strong writing skills and attention to detail. 2. Proficient research and computer skills.

3. Ability to multi-task assigned case loads. 4.

Capacity to work collaboratively with city officials, co-workers and other staff members. MINIMUM ENTRANCE REQUIREMENTS Graduation from an accredited law school. One (1) year of legal experience.

NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: License to practice law in the State of Michigan. Possession and maintenance of a valid State of Michigan Driver's License. SUPPLEMENTAL INFORMATION This position will remain open until filled.
