Is AI replacing web devs?

AI tools are increasingly automating certain tasks in web development, such as code generation and testing, but they do not fully replace web developers. Skilled developers are still needed to design, customize, and maintain websites, especially for complex or unique projects that require creativity and problem-solving. Proficiency in coding languages and understanding of user experience remain essential for web developers.

What does a website developer do?

A website developer designs, builds, and maintains websites using programming languages such as HTML, CSS, and JavaScript. They may also work with content management systems, optimize site performance, and ensure security, often collaborating with designers and clients to meet project requirements.

What are the typical daily responsibilities of a Website Developer working in a collaborative team environment?

As a Website Developer in a team setting, your daily tasks often include coding new website features, troubleshooting bugs, and participating in team meetings to align on project goals. You’ll regularly collaborate with designers to implement visual elements, and work closely with back-end developers to ensure seamless integration of functionality. Effective communication and version control practices, such as using Git, are essential for coordinating with other team members and maintaining a smooth development workflow.

What is the difference between Website Developer vs Web Designer?

While both roles collaborate closely, a Website Developer primarily focuses on coding and building functional websites, whereas a Web Designer concentrates on visual aesthetics and user experience. Understanding these differences helps employers and job seekers target the right skills and responsibilities.

Is a website developer still in demand?

Yes, website developers are in high demand due to the ongoing need for businesses to establish and maintain an online presence. Skills in front-end and back-end development, along with knowledge of programming languages and web frameworks, are particularly valuable in the current job market.

Is 3 months enough for web development?

For a website developer, three months can be sufficient to learn basic web development skills such as HTML, CSS, and JavaScript, especially with intensive study or bootcamps. However, becoming proficient in advanced topics like backend development, frameworks, or responsive design typically requires more time and practical experience.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Website Developer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Website Developer, you need strong proficiency in HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and related web development frameworks, often supported by a degree in computer science or relevant certifications. Familiarity with version control systems like Git, content management systems (CMS) such as WordPress, and web development tools is typically required. Attention to detail, problem-solving skills, and effective communication help developers collaborate and deliver user-focused solutions. These skills ensure that websites are functional, visually appealing, and meet client or business requirements efficiently.

About Birdeye
Birdeye is the leading agentic marketing platform for multi-location brands.

Companies like H&R Block, Aspen Dental, and Caesars Entertainment use Birdeye to manage marketing across thousands of locations — from how they get found, to how they convert, to how they retain customers. Our platform replaces disconnected point tools with AI agents that execute work at the location level — responding to reviews, updating listings, publishing content, and driving conversions.

Backed by Marc Benioff, Jerry Yang, and Accel-KKR, Birdeye was named to G2’s 2026 Best Agentic AI Products list — appearing alongside the world’s leading AI companies. We’re expanding rapidly into enterprise, with growing adoption across large, multi-location brands.

What You’ll Do

We are seeking a Principal Designer to lead and elevate our global web and digital experiences. Based in Palo Alto, this role will define and evolve our brand’s digital expression as we move further upmarket into the enterprise. You will set the creative direction for our premium, high-impact digital presence while managing and mentoring a high-performing design team in India.

This is a highly visible, hands-on leadership role that blends strategic thinking, brand stewardship, and exceptional craft. You will own the end-to-end design vision for our website and prospect-facing digital properties, partnering closely with executives and cross-functional leaders to ensure our brand is consistently expressed through world-class, high-performing digital experiences.

Responsibilities

  • Own and evolve the creative and brand vision for our global website and prospect-facing digital experiences, setting a premium, enterprise-grade design standard.
  • Define how our brand shows up digitally, translating positioning, messaging, and strategy into cohesive, world-class experiences.
  • Lead the end-to-end UX and visual design across desktop, mobile web, and app, ensuring consistency, quality, and performance.
  • Translate business goals, brand strategy, and user needs into elegant, intuitive, and conversion-focused experiences.
  • Apply CRO insights, user research, and experimentation learnings at scale to continuously improve performance.
  • Partner with product, marketing, growth, engineering, and executive stakeholders to align design, brand, and business outcomes.
  • Lead, mentor, and grow a design team based in India, raising the bar for craft, ownership, and execution.
  • Establish and maintain design systems, standards, and guidelines across all digital properties.
Requirements:
  • Bachelor’s degree in Design, HCI, or a related field (or equivalent experience).
  • 7+ years of experience in web, digital, or brand design, including experience in a senior or principal-level role.
  • A portfolio demonstrating exceptional visual craft, modern web experiences, and strong brand-led design.
  • Deep expertise in Figma and modern design/prototyping tools.
  • Strong understanding of UX, interaction design, typography, layout, and motion.
  • Working knowledge of HTML, CSS, and JavaScript.
  • Proven experience mentoring and leading designers.
  • Strong communication skills and the ability to influence at all levels of the organization.

Why You’ll Join Us

At Birdeye, we are relentless innovators driven by a singular goal: to lead our category with unparalleled excellence. We don't just set goals – we surpass them. We're a team of doers who roll up our sleeves and get the job done, delivering on our promises with unwavering dedication.
