What is a Web3 Software Engineer?

A Web3 Software Engineer is a developer who specializes in building decentralized applications (dApps) using blockchain technologies. They work with smart contracts, distributed ledgers, and protocols like Ethereum to create secure and transparent applications that run without central authority. Web3 engineers often use languages such as Solidity or Rust and are skilled in integrating front-end interfaces with blockchain backends. Their work is crucial for projects in decentralized finance (DeFi), NFTs, and other blockchain-based ecosystems.

What is the difference between Web3 Software Engineer vs Blockchain Developer?

AspectWeb3 Software EngineerBlockchain Developer
CredentialsProficiency in blockchain protocols, smart contract languages (Solidity, Rust), and web developmentStrong understanding of blockchain architecture, cryptography, and smart contract development
Work EnvironmentCollaborates with front-end and back-end teams on decentralized applicationsFocuses on designing, coding, and testing blockchain protocols and smart contracts
Industry UsageUsed across DeFi, NFT platforms, and decentralized appsPrimarily in blockchain protocol development and core smart contract creation

While both roles involve blockchain technology, a Web3 Software Engineer develops decentralized applications integrating blockchain with web interfaces, whereas a Blockchain Developer focuses on building and optimizing blockchain protocols and smart contracts. The roles often overlap but differ mainly in scope and focus within the blockchain ecosystem.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Web3 Software Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Web3 Software Engineer, you need strong programming skills (especially in JavaScript, Solidity, and smart contract development), a solid understanding of blockchain fundamentals, and experience with decentralized applications (dApps). Familiarity with tools and frameworks like Ethereum, Truffle, Hardhat, and relevant security certifications is typically expected. Problem-solving, attention to detail, and effective communication are essential soft skills for collaborating in rapidly evolving, decentralized environments. These skills ensure secure, efficient, and innovative blockchain solutions that meet the demands of the Web3 ecosystem.

What are some common challenges Web3 Software Engineers face when developing decentralized applications?

Web3 Software Engineers often encounter challenges related to the rapidly evolving ecosystem, such as keeping up with frequent updates to blockchain protocols and development tools. Ensuring security in smart contracts and managing gas fees effectively are also significant concerns. Additionally, integrating decentralized systems with traditional web infrastructure can require creative problem-solving and collaboration with backend and DevOps teams. Adaptability and a proactive approach to learning are key to navigating these challenges successfully.

Consensys

Job description

Consensys is the leading blockchain and web3 software company. Founded by Joe Lubin, CEO of Consensys and Co-Founder of Ethereum in 2014, Consensys has been at the forefront of innovation, pioneering technological developments within the web3 ecosystem.
The financial system is being rebuilt on open, programmable infrastructure, and Consensys is helping power that transition. From MetaMask, the platform trusted by tens of millions of users worldwide, to Linea, the only 100% proven zkEVM rollup and an emerging home for institutional ETH capital, Consensys builds products and infrastructure that enable users, developers, and institutions to participate in the next generation of the internet.
Our mission is to unlock the collaborative power of communities by making the decentralized web universally easy to access, use, and build on.
Joining Consensys means working with a fully remote, globally distributed team of technologists, designers, cryptographers, product thinkers, and researchers who are building the next layer of the internet. You'll be exposed to new ideas, emerging technologies, and complex challenges that push you to stay at the top of your game while helping scale products and infrastructure used by tens of millions of users and thousands of developers across the web3 ecosystem. You'll join a network of builders that reaches the edge of our ecosystem. Consensys alumni have moved on to become tech entrepreneurs, CEOs, and team leads at tech companies.
About this role
We're looking for a Senior Design Engineer who sweats the details - someone who feels just as at home in Figma as they do in a codebase, and who believes great software should feel like magic. You'll bring that quality of craft to 30M+ MetaMask users every day.
As a Senior Design Engineer, you'll play a critical role in bridging the gap between design and engineering across the MetaMask app and browser extension. You'll collaborate with a world-class team of designers, engineers, and product managers to bring prototypes to life, polish final implementations, and ensure that every interaction feels seamless and intentional. Your focus will be on pixel-perfect execution, cross-platform UI, and crafting world-class experiences in React (web) and React Native (mobile). If you are passionate about building exceptional consumer products, love making complex things feel simple - and want your craft in the hands of 30M+ users - this role is for you.
What You'll Do
In one sentence: Own and elevate the user-facing experience of MetaMask - turning complex Web3 interactions into intuitive, beautiful moments that users love.
  • Build pixel-perfect user interfaces with React and React Native.
  • Simplify complex Web3 interactions, and deliver a seamless experience across mobile and extension.
  • Create intuitive, responsive, and accessible user experiences with smooth transitions and usability in mind.
  • Develop high-fidelity, interactive prototypes to test and validate ideas for fast iteration.
  • Collaborate closely with product designers and engineers to streamline Figma-to-code handoffs and ensure efficient workflows.
  • Contribute to the MetaMask design system by building reusable, scalable, and accessible UI components.
  • Write clean, optimized code to deliver performant animations, interactions, and frontend experiences.
  • Maintain high-quality documentation of components, workflows, and best practices for future collaboration.

Key Experience for this role
  • A portfolio demonstrating sophisticated UI craft, thoughtful interactions, and attention to detail - this is required; if you don't have one, this role may not be the right fit.
  • Expertise in modern Javascript/Typescript, React, and React Native, with experience building web and mobile interfaces.
  • Proven experience building and scaling high-traffic, consumer-facing products with seamless user experiences.
  • Experience delivering pixel-perfect, high-fidelity interfaces with attention to detail.
  • Expertise in building consistent cross-platform user experiences with a focus on accessibility and performance.
  • Hands-on knowledge of design systems, design tokens, and shared component libraries.
  • Proficiency in interaction design, animation frameworks (e.g. Rive, Lottie), and optimizing transitions.
  • Deep familiarity with Figma, including translating designs into well-structured code.
  • Strong collaboration and communication skills, with the ability to work independently in global remote teams.
  • Passion for building polished, user-centered experiences that make complex tasks simple.
  • Knowledge of or interest in Web3 technologies, with bonus points for experience in crypto wallets, blockchain, or related products.

Don't meet all the requirements? Don't sweat it. We're passionate about building a diverse team of humans and as such, if you think you've got what it takes for our chaotic-but-fun, remote-friendly, start-up environment-apply anyway, detailing your relevant transferable skills in your cover letter. While we have a pretty good idea of what we need, we're ready for you to challenge our thinking on who needs to be in this role.
It is a requirement of employment in this position that applicants will be required to submit to background checks including but not limited to employment, education and criminal record checks. Further details will be provided to applicants that successfully meet the criteria for the position as determined by the company in its sole discretion. By submitting an application for employment, you are acknowledging and consenting to this requirement.
The salary range listed for this role applies to US-based candidates only. Compensation for candidates based outside the US (including Canada, EMEA, and LATAM) will be determined based on location, experience, and skills during the interview process, and may differ from the listed US range.
US pay range (not including bonus, equity or other benefits)
$149,000-$210,000 USD
In the rapidly evolving Web3 space, we believe that everyone is a builder. This expansive paradigm requires a range of backgrounds, talents, skills, and experiences to influence and shape the future. At Consensys, this diversity fuels our ability to shift control and redefine the realm of possibility. We are committed to ensuring that our technology empowers people and communities with economic and political agency through decentralized technologies. We welcome the range of perspectives and differences and celebrate them. We're excited to see how your unique skills as a builder can contribute to our vision, drive innovation, and help us shape a more inclusive Web3.
