What is a Web3 Software Engineer?

A Web3 Software Engineer is a developer who specializes in building decentralized applications (dApps) using blockchain technologies. They work with smart contracts, distributed ledgers, and protocols like Ethereum to create secure and transparent applications that run without central authority. Web3 engineers often use languages such as Solidity or Rust and are skilled in integrating front-end interfaces with blockchain backends. Their work is crucial for projects in decentralized finance (DeFi), NFTs, and other blockchain-based ecosystems.

What is the difference between Web3 Software Engineer vs Blockchain Developer?

AspectWeb3 Software EngineerBlockchain Developer
CredentialsProficiency in blockchain protocols, smart contract languages (Solidity, Rust), and web developmentStrong understanding of blockchain architecture, cryptography, and smart contract development
Work EnvironmentCollaborates with front-end and back-end teams on decentralized applicationsFocuses on designing, coding, and testing blockchain protocols and smart contracts
Industry UsageUsed across DeFi, NFT platforms, and decentralized appsPrimarily in blockchain protocol development and core smart contract creation

While both roles involve blockchain technology, a Web3 Software Engineer develops decentralized applications integrating blockchain with web interfaces, whereas a Blockchain Developer focuses on building and optimizing blockchain protocols and smart contracts. The roles often overlap but differ mainly in scope and focus within the blockchain ecosystem.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Web3 Software Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Web3 Software Engineer, you need strong programming skills (especially in JavaScript, Solidity, and smart contract development), a solid understanding of blockchain fundamentals, and experience with decentralized applications (dApps). Familiarity with tools and frameworks like Ethereum, Truffle, Hardhat, and relevant security certifications is typically expected. Problem-solving, attention to detail, and effective communication are essential soft skills for collaborating in rapidly evolving, decentralized environments. These skills ensure secure, efficient, and innovative blockchain solutions that meet the demands of the Web3 ecosystem.

What are some common challenges Web3 Software Engineers face when developing decentralized applications?

Web3 Software Engineers often encounter challenges related to the rapidly evolving ecosystem, such as keeping up with frequent updates to blockchain protocols and development tools. Ensuring security in smart contracts and managing gas fees effectively are also significant concerns. Additionally, integrating decentralized systems with traditional web infrastructure can require creative problem-solving and collaboration with backend and DevOps teams. Adaptability and a proactive approach to learning are key to navigating these challenges successfully.

Job description

About Us

Turnkey is developer-first infrastructure for private key management, making it simple to create wallets, sign transactions, and automate on-chain actions through one elegant API, without ever exposing sensitive key material. Founded by the team who scaled Coinbase Custody from zero to a $100M+ ARR business and helped protect over $100B in crypto assets, Turnkey is tackling crypto security at its foundational level. Our mission is to make strong cryptography the default across the open internet the same way AWS made scalable computing the default for software.

Our team is low-ego, high-agency, and high-autonomy, with a significant amount of combined experience in cryptography, security, and low-level systems. We're building the trustless, programmable infrastructure that will power the next wave of mass-market crypto applications and we're looking for people who want to shape what that future looks like.

We are seeking an Engineering Manager to drive growth throughout our engineering organization. If you're excited about the potential that web3 has to radically change the world for the better and have a sincere desire to help facilitate that change, join us as we redefine decentralized development.

What You'll Do:Strategic Vision and Leadership
  • Develop and articulate the overarching engineering strategy and technical vision
  • Manage a high-performing engineering team and guide the development of Turnkey's product and infrastructure
  • Identify and evaluate emerging technologies and trends in web3 and guide their integration into our product and infrastructure
  • Collaborate with leadership to drive recruitment and onboarding of top engineering talent
  • Contribute to overall strategic planning and technical decision making
Architectural Oversight & Technical Direction
  • Provide strategic technical guidance and leadership, ensuring intelligent architectural decisions that support our long-term goals
  • Oversee the design and implementation of modern application architectures, optimized for the unique challenges of web3
  • Ensure the scalability, security, and reliability of our infrastructure, addressing the complexities of decentralized systems
  • Contribute to defining and delivering processes that drive quality & consistency to our product & infrastructure development
What We're Looking For:
  • Previous managerial experience
  • An understanding of modern application architectures and ability to lead in-depth discussions on how they should be developed and deployed
  • Excellence at holding a high-bar on software and the requisite engineering processes
  • A healthy amount of paranoia :-)
Style points
  • Prior experience working in fast-paced crypto/web3 and/or FinTech companies
  • Actively tracking developments in the crypto ecosystem and opinionated on where it's going
What We Offer
  • Full benefits, including medical, dental, vision, life, disability, HSA/FSA, 401(k) - detailed benefits overview available as we get further in the process
