How does a Web Development Lead typically balance hands-on coding responsibilities with leadership and project management duties?

A Web Development Lead often needs to split their time between writing code, overseeing technical architecture, and guiding their team through project milestones. While they may handle complex coding tasks or set coding standards, a significant part of their role involves facilitating communication between developers, designers, and stakeholders, as well as managing sprint planning and code reviews. Striking the right balance is essential—most leads prioritize mentorship and strategic oversight during peak project phases, but still engage directly with code to stay technically sharp and lead by example.

What does a Web Development Lead do?

A Web Development Lead oversees a team of web developers to design, build, and maintain websites or web applications. They are responsible for setting technical direction, ensuring best coding practices, and coordinating with project managers and stakeholders to deliver high-quality products on time. The role involves both hands-on development and leadership tasks, such as code reviews, mentoring junior developers, and managing project timelines. Web Development Leads often collaborate with designers, QA testers, and other departments to ensure seamless integration and performance. Their goal is to deliver robust, scalable, and user-friendly web solutions.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Web Development Lead, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Web Development Lead, you need deep expertise in front-end and back-end development, experience with frameworks like React or Angular, and a background in computer science or related fields. Familiarity with version control systems (such as Git), project management tools (like Jira), and cloud platforms is typically required, along with certifications in relevant technologies. Strong leadership, communication, and problem-solving skills set standout candidates apart by enabling effective team management and stakeholder collaboration. These skills and qualities are vital for delivering complex web projects efficiently, ensuring code quality, and guiding teams through technical challenges.

Job description

We're looking for a Senior Manager, Marketing Web Development to lead the team responsible for Everlaw's marketing web properties, including Everlaw.com and related digital experiences. This is a highly cross-functional role at the intersection of web development, content, demand generation, analytics, and brand.
Reporting to our Director of Content Marketing, you and your team will drive the execution of our web marketing strategy, including the architecture, maintenance, and optimization of our web properties.
You'll own our marketing web development process and manage a small but high-performing team of developers, while helping lead cross-functional projects, owning reporting on general web performance, visitor metrics, SEO, and AI visibility. Most importantly, you'll lead the creation of world-class websites that perform, rank, and engage.
At Everlaw, our mission is to promote justice by illuminating truth. Our company culture is open and vibrant and we're committed to the professional growth of our team members, offering an annual learning and development stipend and regular check-ins with managers regarding career goals. If you're looking for a place that values passion, integrity, thinking big, and a desire to learn, we'd love to hear from you! Think you're missing some of the skills and are hesitant to apply? We do not believe in the 'perfect' candidate and encourage you to apply if you feel you can bring value to our team.
If this sounds like a match, we'd love to hear from you! This is a full-time, exempt, on-site position located in our Oakland, CA office with a hybrid work schedule: in office M/W/Th with the option to work from home on Tu/Fr.
Getting Started
  • We want you to feel like part of the team early on! Our onboarding process will integrate you into the company with informative sessions on our product, policies, processes, and team structure and goals. And you'll spend meaningful time getting to know your direct reports and discover what excites and challenges them.
  • We're excited for you to learn, grow, and contribute right away! We trust that you'll bring experience and knowledge that will uplift and uplevel the team, but we don't expect you to know everything on Day 1.
In your role, you'll...
  • Lead Everlaw's marketing web development function. You'll manage the team responsible for developing, maintaining, and improving Everlaw's marketing web properties. You'll help ensure our sites are stable, performant, accessible, scalable, and aligned with business needs.
  • Bring rigorous analysis to web performance. You'll own ongoing performance across the core areas of the web function, including site speed, reliability, technical SEO, development quality, operational efficiency, and overall site health.
  • Own web reporting and insights. You'll lead reporting on general web performance, visitor behavior, conversion trends, SEO performance, and emerging AI visibility metrics. You'll translate data into clear insights and recommendations for marketing leaders and cross-functional partners.
  • Lead an efficient development process. You'll manage intake, prioritization, resourcing, QA, release planning, and stakeholder communication for web development work. You'll help the team move quickly while maintaining strong standards for quality, documentation, and long-term maintainability.
  • Guide cross-functional web projects. You'll help lead complex projects that require coordination across stakeholders, systems, timelines, and business goals. You'll bring structure, clarity, and accountability to projects that touch the website and broader digital experience.
  • Manage, coach, and develop your team. You'll set clear priorities, provide consistent feedback, support professional development, and help team members grow their technical, strategic, and operational capabilities.
About you
  • You have a passion for building great websites. You're enthusiastic about creating and improving web properties, tackling technical and non-technical challenges, and experimenting along the way.
  • You have strong technical expertise, with experience in Agile methodologies and development best practices and are adept in JavaScript, Angular, React, CSS, and Jamstack architecture. Bonus if you're familiar leveraging Cursor for development.
  • You are a skilled people manager, with a track record of successfully managing and growing your team. You set clear objectives, provide constructive feedback, and offer targeted support to help your team members achieve their goals.
  • You use data to reflect on past performance and inform your next move. You're comfortable working with web analytics, SEO data, conversion metrics, performance reporting, and technical diagnostics. You can turn data into actionable recommendations for both technical and non-technical audiences.
  • You understand the website as a business asset. You care about clean code and strong infrastructure, but you also understand how the website supports brand, demand generation, content strategy, conversion, customer education, and business growth.
  • You have a history of high performance. With five or more years of experience in web development, web marketing, or a related field (or three years of experience with an advanced degree), you have demonstrated abilities to manage a team and create impactful web content that aligns with strategic goals, target audiences, and phases of the buyer's journey.
  • You are authorized to work in the United States; please note that at this time, Everlaw is not sponsoring visas for any positions.
