What is a web developer hybrid?

A Web Developer Hybrid is a professional who designs, develops, and maintains websites or web applications while working in a hybrid work environment, meaning they split their time between working remotely and in an office. This role typically involves using programming languages like HTML, CSS, and JavaScript, and collaborating with teams both virtually and in-person. Hybrid web developers need strong technical skills as well as the ability to communicate and coordinate effectively across different work settings. Their responsibilities may range from building user interfaces to managing backend systems, depending on the employer's needs.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a web developer hybrid?

To excel as a Web Developer Hybrid, you need strong proficiency in front-end and back-end programming languages such as HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and frameworks like React or Node.js, often supported by a degree in computer science or related experience. Familiarity with version control systems (like Git), development tools, and cloud platforms is typically required. Problem-solving, effective communication, and adaptability are essential soft skills for collaborating across teams and managing diverse projects. These skills ensure the ability to build robust, scalable web applications and effectively contribute to both individual and team goals in a flexible, hybrid work environment.

How does a hybrid work arrangement impact collaboration and productivity for web developers?

A hybrid work arrangement allows web developers to split their time between remote and in-office work, offering flexibility while maintaining team cohesion. Collaboration often involves regular virtual meetings, code reviews, and project management tools to stay aligned with colleagues. While remote work promotes focus and autonomy, in-office days are usually dedicated to brainstorming sessions, pair programming, or tackling complex issues as a group. Adapting to this model may require strong communication skills and proactive engagement to ensure seamless project delivery and continued professional growth.

This role is primarily focused on maintaining and enhancing our main university website (www.sfbu.edu) and other digital assets. You will collaborate closely with our IT team and various departments to ensure our online presence is visually appealing and functionally robust, with an emphasis on graphic design and UI/UX over heavy programming. • Manage and update the main university website (www.sfbu.edu) and additional web properties.
• Ensure websites are visually appealing, current, and aligned with the university's brand standards.
  • Design & User Experience:

• Develop and refine website layouts that prioritize intuitive navigation and a seamless user experience.
• Collaborate with internal stakeholders to translate design concepts into engaging web interfaces.
• Emphasize responsive design to ensure optimal performance across all devices.
  • Content Management & Collaboration:

• Utilize content management systems (e.g., WordPress) to update and manage website content.
• Work with cross-department teams to understand and meet their digital needs.
• Ensure web content remains accurate and consistent with university messaging.
  • Technical Implementation:

• Apply coding tasks (HTML, CSS, and basic JavaScript) as needed to support design enhancements.
• Troubleshoot and resolve front-end issues while maintaining design integrity and user experience.
Minimum Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's Degree in Graphic Design, Web Development, Digital Media, or a related field.
  • A minimum of 2-3 years' experience in web development with an emphasis on design, UI/UX, or graphic design.
  • A portfolio demonstrating successful website design and maintenance projects.
  • Extensive experience with content management systems, preferably Drupal and WordPress.
  • Proficiency in Adobe Photoshop or other graphic design software (e.g., Illustrator, Sketch, or Figma).
  • Familiarity with responsive design principles and mobile-first development strategies.
  • Basic proficiency in HTML, CSS, and JavaScript.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • 3-5 years of experience in web development or graphic design.
  • Experience maintaining high-traffic websites, particularly within an academic or institutional setting.
  • Proficiency in Drupal theme development.
  • Strong visual design skills with an exceptional eye for detail.
  • Ability to balance creative design with technical requirements to deliver an engaging user experience.
  • Understanding of SEO principles and experience in implementing SEO best practices.
  • Familiarity with accessibility standards (such as WCAG) and best practices in designing accessible digital experiences.
  • Project management skills, with an emphasis on delivering high-quality web solutions within specified timelines.
