Job description

Position Summary...What you'll do...
As a Senior Manager, Automation Engineering – Design at Walmart, you will lead the technical design, evaluation of cutting-edge automation systems focused on optimizing fulfillment operations. Your work will directly impact on how Walmart fulfills customer orders faster, more efficiently, and at scale. This is a senior individual contributor role for an experienced engineer who can bridge the gap between automation technology and fulfillment operations, delivering solutions that improve throughput, accuracy, and customer satisfaction. 

Key Responsibilities: 
Fulfillment Automation System Design 

  • Design and implement automation technologies tailored to fulfillment environments (e.g., goods-to-person systems, robotics, automated sorting, AS/RS). 

  • Conduct technical evaluations and cost-benefit analyses to support investments in fulfillment automation technologies. 

  • Develop testing and integration plans to enable seamless workflows between operations, automated systems, and fulfillment software (e.g., order management, WMS). 

Retail Automation Process Flow Design 

  • Map and optimize automation fulfillment processes including decant, picking, packing, staging, curbside handoff, and delivery prep. 

  • Use process design tools to visualize workflows and align automation strategies with operational realities. 

  • Interpret operational data to estimate the impact of automation on service levels, labor, and customer experience. 

Engineering Economics 

  • Apply engineering economics principles to evaluate automation ROI, throughput improvements, and labor efficiency. 

  • Collaborate with finance and strategy teams to align engineering initiatives with broader business goals. 

  • Support detailed project planning efforts, including budget development, schedule creation, and resource planning. 

Mechatronics & System Engineering 

  • Support the mechanical and electrical design of fulfillment equipment—including conveyors, robotics, sorters and AS/RS systems. 

  • Create and interpret 2D/3D views for fulfillment layouts and equipment installations. 

  • Participate in testing, commissioning, and troubleshooting of mechatronic systems. 

Data & Advanced Analytics 

  • Analyze fulfillment performance data to inform system tuning and optimization. 

  • Use tools like SQL, Python, R, or Power BI to model outcomes and identify opportunities for improvement. 

  • Collaborate with data science teams on predictive models for demand, labor, and throughput optimization. 

 

Minimum Qualifications: 

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical, Electrical, Systems, or Industrial Engineering (or related field). 

  • 5+ years of experience in automation engineering, including fulfillment or supply chain environments. 

  • Deep understanding of automation technologies (robotics, AS/RS, conveyors, vision systems) and their application in retail or eCommerce fulfillment. 

  • Experience integrating hardware systems with operations and fulfillment software platforms (WMS, WES, OMS). 

 

Preferred Qualifications: 

  • Master’s degree in Engineering or related technical/business field. 

  • Experience with micro-fulfillment systems, last-mile robotics, or Fulfilment-based automation. 

  • PMP, Lean Six Sigma, or equivalent certification. 

  • Proficiency with AutoCAD, SolidWorks, Emulate3D, or other simulation/modeling tools. 

  • Programming or analytics experience with Python, R, SQL, or similar platforms

The annual salary range for this position is $110,000.00 - $220,000.00 Additional compensation includes annual or quarterly performance bonuses. Additional compensation for certain positions may also include :
