What is the difference between Robotics Systems Engineer vs Mechanical Engineer?

AspectRobotics Systems EngineerMechanical Engineer
Required CredentialsBachelor's in Robotics, Electrical, or Mechanical Engineering; certifications in robotics or automationBachelor's in Mechanical Engineering; often Professional Engineer (PE) license
Work EnvironmentDesigning, developing, and testing robotic systems in labs or manufacturing settingsDesigning mechanical components, systems, or machinery in various industries
Industry UsageRobotics, automation, manufacturing, researchAutomotive, aerospace, manufacturing, product design

Robotics Systems Engineers focus on designing and integrating robotic systems, combining electrical, software, and mechanical components. Mechanical Engineers primarily work on mechanical design and analysis. While both roles may collaborate, Robotics Systems Engineers have a specialized focus on automation and robotics technology, making their skills more aligned with modern automation industries.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Robotics Systems Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Robotics Systems Engineer, you need expertise in robotics design, control systems, programming (such as C++ or Python), and a relevant engineering degree. Familiarity with technical tools like ROS (Robot Operating System), CAD software, and simulation platforms, as well as certifications in robotics or automation, is highly beneficial. Strong problem-solving skills, teamwork, and effective communication help distinguish top performers in this field. These competencies are vital for designing, integrating, and maintaining complex robotic systems that meet operational and safety standards.

What are Robotics Systems Engineers?

Robotics Systems Engineers are professionals who design, develop, integrate, and maintain robotic systems used in various industries such as manufacturing, healthcare, and logistics. They work on both the hardware and software aspects of robotics, ensuring that all components function together effectively. Their responsibilities often include system modeling, simulation, programming, troubleshooting, and collaborating with multidisciplinary teams to create automated solutions. Robotics Systems Engineers play a key role in advancing automation and improving efficiency, safety, and productivity in different sectors.

What are some common challenges faced by Robotics Systems Engineers when integrating hardware and software components?

Robotics Systems Engineers often encounter challenges related to ensuring seamless communication between hardware sensors, actuators, and software algorithms. Synchronizing real-time data streams, addressing hardware compatibility issues, and debugging complex system interactions can be demanding. Engineers frequently collaborate with multidisciplinary teams, including mechanical, electrical, and software engineers, to resolve these challenges and ensure reliable system performance. Adapting quickly to new technologies and troubleshooting unexpected behaviors are crucial skills in this dynamic role.

Job description

Join Us in Building the Future of Home Robotics
At Sunday, we're developing personal robots to reclaim the hours lost to repetitive tasks. We're focused on an ambitious goal to make generalized robots broadly accessible, enabling households to take back quality time.
We have spent the last 18 months building a talented team, securing capital, and validating our technology. We are now seeking passionate individuals to join us in the next phase of our growth. If you are ready to apply your skills to the forefront of robotics innovation, we'd love to hear from you.
What to Expect
In building robots for the home, we are tackling a true grand challenge in robotics: dexterous and safe mobile manipulation in unstructured environments. To make this possible, we are building across the entire robotics stack. We're training state-of-the-art AI models that leverage our large-scale, high-quality, real-world data collection system. At the same time, we're building a new kind of consumer hardware product, which will be deployed into homes and delivering real value for real customers. As an early member of a small, cross-functional team, you'll play a key role in pushing both our technology and product forward: advancing the frontier of embodied AI, and soon giving countless hours back to our customers so they can spend more time on the things they value most.
As a Robotics System Integration Engineer, you'll play a central role in delivering reliable, safe, and capable home robots to consumers at scale. You'll work closely with mechanical, electrical, and software engineers to diagnose and resolve issues with our existing robots. You'll use these findings to refine our manufacturing and QA processes, and inform the system architecture and requirements for future design cycles. This role offers significant scope and ownership, and the chance to help shape cutting-edge technology into a cohesive, trustworthy product.
What You'll Do
  • Integrate and test robotic systems, including both actuation and perception hardware
  • Triage and debug cross-disciplinary issues spanning mechanical, electrical, firmware, and software systems
  • Bring up, test, and evaluate key components, such as sensors and actuators
  • Maintain motor and sensor drivers, and related software tools, in Python / C++
  • Develop clear processes for robot assembly, bringup, QA testing, and troubleshooting
  • Help define component and subsystem performance requirements, and develop test plans to ensure reliable robot operation across a diverse range of tasks and environments
  • Support design of robot HW and SW systems, collaborating across teams to optimize the architecture of next-gen robot products for safety, performance, reliability, cost, and manufacturability

What You'll Bring
  • 3+ years of experience working with complex robotic or electromechanical systems
  • Proficiency in Python or C++
  • Strong system-level understanding of robotics hardware, firmware, and software layers
  • Deep familiarity with standard diagnostic tools (oscilloscope, multimeter, logic analyzers)
  • Experience developing test plans and procedures for electromechanical systems

Nice to haves
  • Deep experience in protocols including CAN, Ethernet, USB, MIPI, GMSL
  • Experience with quasi-direct-drive actuators
  • Experience calibrating computer vision systems

At Sunday Robotics, we're building technology shaped by real people - curious, creative, and diverse. We're proud to be an equal opportunity employer and consider all qualified applicants regardless of race, color, religion, gender, gender identity or expression, sexual orientation, national origin, genetics, disability, age, or veteran status.
Even if you don't meet every single requirement, we encourage you to apply. Studies show that women and underrepresented groups often hold back unless they meet 100% of the criteria - we don't want that to be the reason we miss out on great talent.
