How much do marine robotics engineer jobs pay per hour?

As of Jun 6, 2026, the average hourly pay for marine robotics engineer in the United States is $42.93, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $31.97 and $51.44 per hour, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the Marine Robotics Engineer position, and why are they important?

Marine Robotics Engineers need strong backgrounds in mechanical or electrical engineering, robotics, and programming (often with degrees in relevant fields). Familiarity with design software (CAD), underwater navigation systems, embedded controllers, and certifications such as Professional Engineer (PE) or marine safety training are commonly valued. Excellent problem-solving, teamwork, and communication skills enable collaboration on multidisciplinary projects and field deployments. These capabilities are crucial for developing reliable robotic systems that operate in challenging and often unpredictable marine environments.

What does a Marine Robotics Engineer do?

A Marine Robotics Engineer designs, develops, and operates robotic systems for underwater applications. These engineers work on autonomous underwater vehicles (AUVs), remotely operated vehicles (ROVs), and other robotic platforms used for ocean exploration, environmental monitoring, and industrial tasks like offshore drilling. They integrate mechanical, electrical, and software engineering principles to create reliable systems for deep-sea operations. Their work often involves programming, sensor integration, and optimizing robotics for harsh underwater conditions.

What types of projects and daily tasks can a Marine Robotics Engineer expect to be involved with?

Marine Robotics Engineers typically work on designing, building, testing, and maintaining remotely operated vehicles (ROVs), autonomous underwater vehicles (AUVs), or other marine robotic systems. Daily tasks may include developing control algorithms, troubleshooting hardware, conducting field tests at sea, and interpreting sensor data. Collaboration with oceanographers, software developers, and mechanical engineers is common, as project teams are often multidisciplinary. You may also be involved in preparing technical documentation, integrating new sensing technologies, and contributing to research proposals or presentations. This role offers diverse, hands-on work in both laboratory and field settings, making it an exciting career for those interested in innovation and the marine environment.

What engineer can make $500,000 a year?

Marine Robotics Engineers typically do not earn $500,000 annually; such high salaries are more common in executive or specialized roles within the tech or engineering industries. Achieving this level often requires extensive experience, advanced skills in robotics, leadership positions, or working in high-paying sectors like defense or aerospace. Salary levels vary based on location, company, and individual expertise.
