What are Robotics Deployment Engineers?

Robotics Deployment Engineers are professionals who specialize in installing, integrating, and configuring robotic systems in real-world settings. They work closely with clients to ensure robots are properly set up, tested, and optimized for specific operational needs. Their responsibilities often include troubleshooting hardware and software issues, providing on-site support, and training staff on using robotic equipment. These engineers play a critical role in making sure robotics technology transitions smoothly from the lab or factory to its intended application environment.

What are some typical challenges faced by Robotics Deployment Engineers during on-site installations?

Robotics Deployment Engineers often encounter challenges such as adapting to varying facility layouts, integrating new robotic systems with existing infrastructure, and troubleshooting unexpected hardware or software issues during deployment. Communication and collaboration with local IT, operations, and maintenance teams are key to overcoming these obstacles, as each site may present unique requirements or constraints. Being flexible and solution-oriented is essential, as timelines can be tight and successful deployment often hinges on quickly resolving integration and performance concerns.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Robotics Deployment Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Robotics Deployment Engineer, you need a strong background in robotics, mechanical or electrical engineering, and experience with system integration, often supported by a relevant engineering degree. Familiarity with programming languages (such as Python or C++), robotics middleware (like ROS), and hands-on experience with automation hardware and control systems are typically essential. Problem-solving, adaptability, and excellent communication skills help you coordinate with cross-functional teams and address client needs effectively. These skills ensure successful on-site deployment, troubleshooting, and optimization of robotic systems in diverse environments.

Job description

Robotics Deployment Engineer
Vecna Robotics is an intelligent flexible material handling automation company that keeps goods moving. With award-winning technology engineered for uninterrupted work between autonomous mobile robots, labor, and systems, we make business go. As a company, we are driven by the same collective vision: an uninterrupted and highly efficient global supply chain where robots do the dirty work and people do the human work.
Vecna Robotics seeks a Robotics Deployment Engineer to lead onsite deployment operations and serve as an onsite presence from the start of deployment until the system is operating in production. The Deployment Engineer is a customer-facing role that requires in-depth knowledge of mechanical- and software-based diagnostic tools and excellent communication skills. The ideal candidate is excited about automation, is highly motivated, and detail oriented. This role requires extensive travel – between 75 – 100%.
The Robotics Deployment Engineer is a remote role, but the employee must be based in Boston, MA, Louisville, KY, Detroit, MI, Chicago, IL, Indianapolis, IN, or Cincinnati, OH.
Reporting to the Deployment Engineering Supervisor, this is a full-time, salaried role. Applicants must be authorized to work for any employer in the U.S. We are unable to sponsor or take over sponsorship of an employment Visa at this time.

In this role, the Deployment Engineer will:
  • Be responsible for successful configuration of our autonomous robots at customer sites, from robot mapping and navigation to fleet traffic management, to customer training.
  • Design and conduct thorough test plans for customer-specific use-cases.
  • Perform on-site hardware, software, and networking set-up of autonomous robots and systems. Refine customer/site workflows and ensure our systems fit into all customer operational processes.
  • Work closely with the customer operations team and technical leads to coordinate deployment solutions, manage customer relationships and priority issues.
  • Develop an understanding of a customer's existing operations and workflows and complete a site configuration for our automated solution. Serve as an on-site customer resource.
  • Collect data to assess system performance and ensure all system performance expectations are achieved; log all site issues found onsite into the tracking system for teams in engineering, deployment, and support.
  • Conduct User Acceptance Testing (UAT) and training with the customer.
  • Create documentation for internal teams to support a customer’s system after go-live.
  • Travel extensively, between 75% and 100%.
What we are looking for:
  • BS in Engineering, preferably in Industrial Engineering, Systems Engineering, Computer Science or Mechanical Engineering; a degree in Supply Chain Management or other technical degrees considered.
  • In-depth knowledge and experience with mechanical and software based diagnostic tools.
  • Exceptional attention to detail.
  • Experience with using metrics and data analysis to support or drive the right or most beneficial process improvements.
  • Demonstrated critical thinking and problem-solving skills.
  • Able to thrive in a fast-paced environment with tight timelines and high-energy culture.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to clearly articulate project information to all stakeholder levels.
  • Ability to travel ~75%-100% of each month for this role.
  • Prior technical automation/robotics experience preferred.
  • Experience writing or debugging code.
  • Ability to lift 25 lbs. or more and prolonged periods of standing or walking if necessary.
  • Valid driver's license.
  • The following experience is a plus:
    • Linux Operating System
    • Working in warehouse settings
We are an equal opportunity employer. We encourage and celebrate diversity.
