Description
This is a full-time seasonal position with an anticipated duration of approximately 2.5 months.
Must be able to work a non-standard work schedule as needed, including evenings, weekends, and holidays.
This position performs a variety of semi-skilled and skilled tasks in the maintenance and operation of municipal building grounds, parks and recreational facilities. Works in coordination with Parks Maintenance Workers.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Maintenance of Grounds and Facilities
- Mows grass and maintains park and open space areas such as baseball and soccer fields; shovels snow when necessary; removes weeds; clean and maintains tennis courts and nets; maintains sprinkler systems and assists in the repair and installation of sprinkler lines and heads.
- Drags ball fields; lines for games.
- Inspects, washes, and performs routine maintenance of park drinking fountains and restrooms.
- Sweeps, washes, paints, and repairs or replaces park tables and slabs.
- Opens and closes, locks and unlocks facilities as needed.
- Plants lawns, trees, shrubs, and flowers.
- Carries out the seeding, fertilizing, top dressing, soil conditioning, watering, and the pest and weed control of parks and open spaces.
- Assists in setting up and taking down equipment for various park and recreation programs, prepares facilities for park and recreation program use.
- Installs and maintains goal posts and nets for sports facilities, including soccer, volleyball, baseball, softball, tennis and basketball.
Building Maintenance
- Performs minor semi-skilled interior building maintenance such as painting, plumbing, carpentry, and other unskilled and semi-skilled trades work.
Equipment Operation and Maintenance
- Performs routine cleaning of lawn and power equipment.
- Employees 18 years or older may operate tractors, mowers, jack hammers, welders, trucks, steam cleaners, buffers, washers, and other listed equipment as needed
Custodial Work
- Performs custodial work such as required and assigned including: change light bulbs and fluorescent tubes; sweep floors; vacuum carpets; mop; shampoo and steam clean carpets; buff non-carpeted areas; dump garbage and reline cans with liners; clean and sanitize restrooms and replenish supplies; sweep; empty trash cans; clean spills; clean drinking fountains, mirrors, tables, walls, fixtures, blinds, light fixtures, etc.; dust furniture; wash windows, walls, metal and woodwork; clean rain gutters; sweep roofs.
- Collects and disposes of solid waste from buildings and grounds; picks up litter from premises.
OTHER DUTIES
- Maintains current skills and knowledge in the proper and safe techniques of building and grounds maintenance functions.
- Assists in the construction of new parks facilities, including clearing, grading, drainage, and foundation work.
- Assists in the training and/or task-oversight of community service workers or volunteers.
- Performs other related duties as needed and assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
Education and Experience
- High school diploma or GED equivalent AND
- Minimum four (4) to six (6) months general employment experience.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Knowledge of:
- Equipment, materials and supplies used in building and grounds maintenance.
- Equipment and supplies used to do minor repairs.
- First aid and applicable safety precautions.
Skills & Ability to:
- Ability to work independently under general direction and to complete daily activities according to established procedures and assigned work schedule.
- Ability to perform strenuous physical labor under adverse field conditions and to lift and carry heavy objects.
- Ability to communicate in a clear, concise manner, both orally and in writing.
- Ability to understand, follow, and transmit written and oral instructions.
- Ability to establish effective working relationships with employees, supervisors, and the public.
- Represent the City in a positive and professional manner.
- Support and promote the City's mission, vision, and core values in all aspects of job performance.
Special Requirements
- Must be a minimum of eighteen (18) years of age.
- Must have a valid driver's license and appropriate insurance at the time of hire for work-related travel.
- Must pass appropriate background checks.
- Possess (or obtain within six months of hire date) CPR and First Aid certifications and maintain them throughout tenure.
- Must be able to work a non-standard work schedule as needed, including evenings, week-ends, and holidays.

As a temporary employee of the City of Lynden, seasonal/temporary employees will not receive vacation leave, and are not eligible for holiday pay, or health insurance programs. However, seasonal/temporary positions will receive sick leave benefits: and will accrue one (1) hour of sick leave for every 40 hours worked and any other benefits required by law.
Seasonal/Temporary positions lasting less than five (5) months are not eligible for retirement benefits. Should work be extended to five months or more, and if you work at least 70 hours per month during that time, the position will become eligible for retirement benefits through the Washington State Department of Retirement Systems. If the position becomes eligible there will be a required and shared employee/employer premium contribution to the plan.
