Job description

Seasonal Maintenance Worker to work fulltime for six months in the Parks division of the City of Port Townsend's Community Services Department.

$24.52/hour, 40 hours per week, eligible for overtime

No medical benefits but accrues 1 hour of sick time per 40 hours worked, eligible for WA State PERS, & able to access City's Employee Assistance Program (EAP)

Working schedule: generally Sunday - Thursday 6:00 a.m. - 3:30 p.m. but may vary through the seasonal term

JOB SUMMARY

Performs a variety of tasks including but not limited to maintenance of all park facilities. Position will also include trash pickup, weeding in the right-of-way, painting, trail maintenance and special events preparation.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Performs various maintenance, landscaping, and custodial tasks to provide care and upkeep of parks, open space, trails and facilities.
  • Safely operates equipment such as riding and push lawn mowers, line trimmers, backpack blowers, edgers and hedgers.
  • Safely operates portable equipment and small hand and power tools necessary to maintain City properties.
  • Performs a variety of routine repair and maintenance tasks on equipment.
  • Manually removes unwanted weeds from rights-of-way and developed landscapes and/or native areas.
  • Cleans and maintains public restrooms, picnic shelters, picnic tables, garbage cans and other facilities.
  • Tracks work activities in online work order system
  • Other related duties as assigned by the Crew Chief or Facilities & Parks Manager.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

General knowledge of ground maintenance and landscaping and custodial practices.

    • Communicates efficiently and effectively with team members, managers, and other departments, both verbally and in writing, using tact, patience and courtesy to convey instructions, provide feedback, receive feedback, and resolve issues.
    • Collaborates with team members to resolve problems in a timely manner.

    • Ability to adhere to WISHA and DOSH health and safety requirements in the workplace.

    • Ability to perform physical work outdoors under all weather conditions

QUALIFICATIONS

Required

  • Any equivalent combination of education and experience that provides the applicant with the knowledge, skills and abilities required to perform the job.
  • Must be at least 18 years old at the time of hire.
  • Valid Washington driver's license and ability to maintain a driving record acceptable to the City's insurance carrier.
  • Must pass criminal background check.

Preferred

  • Previous experience working for a parks and recreation department/organization/agency; horticulture experience including local plant identification skills; equipment maintenance experience; custodial experience.
  • Experience in a public setting.
  • Previous experience performing general maintenance work using hand tools such as shovels, rakes, small power equipment, etc.
  • First AidCPR certification.

WORKING CONDITIONS

  • Duties are performed primarily in the outdoors during all types of weather.
  • Walking for extended periods of time.
  • Repeated bending at the waist, kneeling or crouching.
  • Ability to lift, push and pull 60 pounds.
  • Vision and hearing at level required to perform essential functions (may be corrected).
  • Physical and visual ability sufficient to perform required duties effectively and safely and to safely operate required equipment and City vehicle as needed.
  • Requires full range of motor skills and dexterity to operate handheld tools.
