Description
Under immediate supervision, performs routine semi-skilled work in the operation of motorized equipment; does related work as required.
Examples of Duties
  • Operates a tandem dump truck and other equipment in connection with the transportation of sand, stone, gravel and supplies.
  • Operates a light truck in carrying tools, equipment and supplies to and from repair jobs.
  • Operates a motor truck engaged in sanding and plowing icy streets and roads and in snow removal; occasionally services and performs minor repairs on equipment.
  • Operates a tar distributor used in road maintenance; as a trainee.
  • Operates medium or heavy equipment; when not operating equipment, performs semi-skilled work at job site.

Typical Qualifications
Education and Experience: Any combination of education and experience equivalent to completion of the eleventh grade and some experience in the operation of motorized equipment.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: Some knowledge of the principles and practices of operating and servicing trucks and related light construction equipment; some knowledge of the traffic laws and regulations governing equipment operation; some knowledge of the occupational hazards involved and the safety precautions necessary to the proper operation of varied construction and maintenance equipment; skill and care in the operation of several types of trucks and construction equipment; ability to make minor repairs and adjustments to equipment. Able to work 12 hour shifts 7 days a week during ice and snow removal.
Physical RequirementsThis work requires the frequent exertion of up to 50 pounds of force; work regularly requires sitting, speaking or hearing, using hands to finger, handle or feel, reaching with hands and arms and repetitive motions, frequently requires standing, walking and lifting and occasionally requires climbing or balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching or crawling, tasting or smelling and pushing or pulling; work has standard vision requirements; vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word and conveying detailed or important instructions to others accurately, loudly or quickly; hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels and to receive detailed information through oral communications and/or to make fine distinctions in sound; work requires preparing and analyzing written or computer data, visual inspection involving small defects and/or small parts, using of measuring devices, operating machines, operating motor vehicles or equipment and observing general surroundings and activities; work regularly requires working near moving mechanical parts, exposure to fumes or airborne particles, exposure to outdoor weather conditions and exposure to vibration and occasionally requires exposure to toxic or caustic chemicals, exposure to the risk of electrical shock, and exposure to bloodborne pathogens and may be required to wear specialized personal protective equipment; work is generally in a loud noise location (e.g. grounds maintenance, heavy traffic).
