SUMMARY:

The Vice President of Security is the system leader for physical security and public safety across Brown University Health's hospitals, all care sites and administrative locations. The role sets strategy; leads daily operations; ensures regulatory compliance; drives workplace-violence prevention; oversees threat/risk assessment; manages contracted security partnerships; and integrates with emergency management and clinical operations to protect patients, visitors, workforce, and assets. The Vice President establishes standard work and performance metrics for a coordinated, data-driven security program at scale across a multi-hospital academic health system.

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Work Environment

This position operates within a dynamic healthcare environment that includes hospitals, outpatient centers, and administrative facilities. The Vice President of Security must be available for on-site response to emergencies and critical incidents across multiple campuses. The role requires frequent interaction with clinical staff, patients, and law enforcement, and involves occasional exposure to high-stress or emotionally charged situations. While primarily office-based, regular rounds, after-hours availability, and 24/7 on-call responsibilities are expected to maintain safety and operational readiness across the system.

Strategy, Governance & System Leadership
  • Define and implement a multi-year security strategy aligned with BUH's mission and risk profile.
  • Establish systemwide standards, policies, and the annual Security Management Plan for hospitals, ambulatory sites, and corporate offices.
  • Chair or co-chair the System Security and Workplace Violence Prevention Committee and represent Security on Environment of Care and Emergency Management councils.
  • Establish governance for security technology, investigations, incident reporting, and analytics dashboards.
Regulatory Compliance
  • Ensure compliance with Joint Commission standards, CMS Conditions of Participation, and IAHSS Healthcare Security Guidelines.
  • Maintain readiness for all audits and regulatory reviews through continuous monitoring and documentation.
Workplace Violence Prevention (WPV) & Clinical Partnership
  • Lead the BUH WPV prevention program including risk assessments, early-alerting protocols, staff de-escalation training, and post-incident response.
  • Collaborate with Nursing, Behavioral Health, and HR to reduce incidents and ensure trauma-informed approaches to patient and staff interactions.
Operations & Service Delivery
  • Oversee daily 24/7 operations including dispatch, patrols, visitor management, parking, and event security.
  • Standardize site post orders, response protocols, and KPIs across all hospitals and ambulatory locations.
  • Manage in-house and contracted security teams ensuring consistent service delivery, training, and accountability.
Investigations & Law Enforcement Liaison
  • Oversee investigations into patient, visitor, or employee incidents and coordinate with HR, Legal, and local authorities as required. Partner with operational leadership and HR for any employee incidents.
  • Maintain formal partnerships with local, state, and federal law enforcement agencies.
Emergency Management Integration
  • Integrate security functions with the Hospital Incident Command System (HICS/NIMS) for drills, surge, and disaster response.
  • Support campus lockdown and crisis communication protocols.
Technology & Systems
  • Develop and execute the physical security technology roadmap including access control, VMS, alarms, and analytics systems.
  • Collaborate with IT to ensure cyber-physical integration and data privacy in all systems.
Analytics & Performance
  • Implement incident reporting and analytics dashboards to identify risk trends, staffing needs, and training priorities.
  • Track KPIs including response times, WPV rates, alarm reliability, and staff safety compliance.
Budget & Vendor Management
  • Manage a multi-site operating and capital budget for security and technology systems.
  • Oversee vendor selection, RFPs, and contract compliance for security and technology services.
Talent, Training & Culture
  • Recruit and develop managers and supervisors to lead with empathy and operational discipline.
  • Ensure comprehensive training programs in de-escalation, MOAB/CPI, emergency codes, and incident documentation.

Performs other duties as assigned.

EDUCATION:

Bachelor's in Criminal Justice, Security Management, or related field; Master's preferred.

EXPERIENCE:

Experience: Minimum 10 years of progressive security leadership, including 5+ years in multi-site healthcare operations; law enforcement experience (FBI, DEA, Border Patrol, Military, Police) preferred


Certifications: CHPA (IAHSS), CPP/PSP (ASIS), NIMS/ICS certifications preferred.
Knowledge: Joint Commission, IAHSS, HICS, and physical security technologies.
Skills: Strategic planning, analytics, crisis management, budgeting, stakeholder engagement.
