Voyage Advisory information

What is a voyage advisory?

A Voyage Advisory is a professional service that provides guidance and recommendations to shipping companies, vessel operators, or travelers regarding the safest and most efficient routes for maritime journeys. This service takes into account factors such as weather conditions, geopolitical risks, port regulations, and environmental concerns to optimize voyage planning. Voyage advisors help ensure that vessels avoid delays, reduce operational costs, and comply with international maritime regulations. Their expertise is critical in minimizing risks and improving the overall safety and success of sea voyages.

How does a voyage advisory professional typically collaborate with other departments within a maritime organization?

Voyage Advisory professionals regularly work alongside operations, chartering, and technical teams to optimize voyage planning and execution. They provide expertise on routing, weather analysis, fuel efficiency, and regulatory compliance, ensuring voyages are both safe and cost-effective. Close collaboration is essential to address real-time challenges, such as unexpected weather changes or port delays, and to ensure all stakeholders are aligned on voyage objectives and adjustments. This teamwork helps minimize risk and maximize profitability for the organization.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a voyage advisor, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Voyage Advisor, you need expertise in maritime logistics, navigational planning, and shipping regulations, often supported by a degree in maritime studies or a related field. Familiarity with voyage management systems, shipping software, and international maritime codes is essential. Strong analytical thinking, attention to detail, and effective communication enable you to provide accurate guidance and collaborate with ship operators and stakeholders. These skills ensure safe, efficient, and compliant voyages, minimizing operational risks and costs.

Job description

Senior Business Analyst – Accounting Systems (Consultant)
About Voyage Advisory
Voyage Advisory is a boutique management consulting firm that helps organizations elevate service, drive performance, and power transformation. We partner with clients across multiple industries to solve complex business challenges through strategic advisory, operational excellence, process improvement, and technology-enabled transformation.
We are seeking a Senior Business Analyst – Accounting Systems to join our consulting team and support a client in the commercial insurance industry. While insurance experience is a plus, it is not required. The ideal candidate brings deep business analysis expertise within accounting and finance environments and has a proven track record of representing business stakeholders throughout large-scale system implementations and transformation initiatives.
Position Overview
This is a senior-level consulting role responsible for serving as the bridge between accounting business users, technology teams, implementation partners, and project stakeholders. The successful candidate will possess a strong accounting foundation, exceptional business analysis skills, and the ability to advocate for business needs while helping drive complex system and process transformation efforts.
We are specifically seeking candidates who have worked closely with accounting organizations and understand the operational realities of accounting processes. This is not a technical systems analyst role. The individual must be capable of leading requirements discussions, challenging assumptions when necessary, facilitating decisions, and ensuring solutions align with business objectives.
Experience with accounting and financial systems such as Blackline, Kyriba, Guidewire, or similar platforms is required.
Key Responsibilities
  • Serve as the primary liaison between accounting business users, project teams, vendors, and technology stakeholders, representing and advocating for the business throughout the project lifecycle.
  • Lead requirements gathering sessions, stakeholder interviews, and workshops; document current- and future-state processes, business requirements, user stories, and acceptance criteria.
  • Analyze accounting operations to identify opportunities for process improvement and automation, translating business needs into requirements that align with operational objectives.
  • Facilitate discussions between business and technical teams to drive stakeholder consensus, ensure proposed solutions will adequately meet business needs
  • Support accounting transformation initiatives — system implementations, process redesign, and data conversion — including participation in solution design reviews to validate requirements are accurately reflected.
  • Develop and execute UAT strategies and plans, including writing test scripts and scenarios and coordinating testing activities with business users.
  • Track defects, facilitate resolution, and support business sign-off; assist with data validation, reconciliation, and conversion testing.
  • Partner with stakeholders to manage risks and resolve issues, producing clear project documentation, training materials, and business communications.

Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting or a related discipline, or a comparable combination of education and relevant accounting-related work experience.
  • Strong accounting background with the ability to understand and discuss accounting processes and controls. Experience supporting general ledger, accounts payable, accounts receivable, reconciliations, month-end close, financial reporting, or order-to-cash processes.
  •  8+ years of Business Analyst experience supporting accounting, finance, or financial systems initiatives.
  • Demonstrated hands-on experience leading business analysis activities and personally owning key BA activities, such as  requirements, documenting business processes, creating user stories, and developing acceptance criteria.
  • Experience with Blackline, Kyriba, Guidewire, or similar accounting, financial, treasury, or policy administration platforms.
  • Experience supporting accounting transformations, system implementations, or significant process improvement initiatives.
  • Experience representing business users when working with technical teams, software vendors, or implementation partners.
  • Experience working with complex financial data, reconciliations, data validation, and issue resolution.
  • Hands-on involvement in User Acceptance Testing (UAT), including writing test scripts, coordinating testing activities, documenting defects, and supporting business sign-off.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills with the ability to interact effectively with senior leadership and business stakeholders.

Preferred Qualifications
  • CPA certification.
  • Commercial insurance industry experience.
  • Consulting experience supporting multiple clients or large-scale transformation initiatives.

What Success Looks Like
The successful candidate will be viewed as a trusted advisor by business stakeholders, a strong advocate for accounting users, and a key contributor to transformation initiatives. They will bring structure to ambiguity, drive informed decision-making through data and documentation, facilitate collaboration across teams, and help ensure that implemented solutions deliver measurable business value.
Compensation
This position will include a base salary and full benefits, including health, dental, vision, life, disability, vacation, and 401(k) with company match.
Location
This position is 100% remote.
