The City of College Place is recruiting Volunteer Firefighters. Whether it is a fire or medical emergency, our volunteer responders make a difference. Not only can YOU can make a difference by becoming a Volunteer Firefighter, but you will also learn valuable skills and make some great friends along the way.

Five reasons why YOU should join the
College Place Fire Department Volunteer Program
1. You can live for free! Residents live at the fire station in a dorm-like setting with benefits like wired and wireless internet access in each room, free laundry access, a weight room, uniforms, and you get to ride in a fire engine! The only regular, monthly living expense you have is food.
2. You get paid to fight fires! All resident firefighters receive a monthly stipend, depending on qualifications, in exchange for serving a regularly scheduled shift every third weeknight and some weekends. Live-at-home firefighters receive a monthly stipend based on qualifications and their activity level in responding to emergencies, volunteering for shifts, attending department training and providing additional support for community events.
3. You will learn everything you need to know on the job! All members go through a series of basic firefighter training prior to responding to emergency incidents. After this basic training, members participate in a weekly department training session used to learn new skills, maintain current skills, or expand on the basics of firefighting. Firefighters can receive in-house training to become internationally certified, as well as training opportunities to become an engine or ambulance driver, wildland firefighter or an EMT. There are also opportunities for rank promotion and leadership within the department.
4. Serve your community around your schedule! The resident program is designed to accommodate people who need to attend classes, study, or have other jobs during the day. Live-at-home firefighters dedicate their time and talent, as they are available, while attending department trainings on Monday evenings.
5. You get to be a firefighter! This is a terrific community service organization where you get to have an active, hands-on part in helping people in our community and our surrounding neighbors.

PURPOSE:
To establish a uniform, unbiased system of administration throughout the Fire Department. The policies, procedures, SOG's (Standard Operating Guidelines) and all other guidance documents adopted by the College Place City Council shall pertain to all members of the Fire Department, whether paid, volunteer, temporary or any other type of classification.

Essential Job Functions & Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Depending upon assignment, the incumbent may perform a combination of some or all of the following duties, which are a representative sample of the level of work appropriate to this class.
Volunteer Firefighters with this Department, under general supervision, fight fires and perform other related work in responding to alarms and emergency calls for the protection of life and property; perform specialized firefighting duties in connection with the operation of vehicles and equipment in route to and at the scene of an incident.
EXAMPLE OF DUTIES
  • Respond to fire alarms for the protection of life and property.
  • Use equipment and tools as directed to safely and quickly bring the emergency or other situations under control.
  • Administer first aid.
  • Drive various types of fire apparatus to and from the scene.
  • Operate pumping equipment and related apparatus to insure that necessary water pressure and volume is maintained at all times.
  • Assist with maintenance checks of vehicles and facilities.
  • Make sure that all apparatus and equipment is cleaned and returned to service as soon as possible after an incident.
  • Operate two-way radios.
  • Wash and test fire hose.
  • Work to maintain clean and orderly conditions in and around the fire station.
  • Be familiar with Fire Department Policy and Procedures, fire hazards, and firefighting techniques.
  • Assist with fire prevention activities.
  • Actively participate in prescribed fire training courses and perform related work asrequired.
  • Performs additional job assignments as directed.

Education and Experience; Licenses, Certifications & Other Requirements
KNOWLEDGE REQUIRED:
  • Ability to meet and deal with the public in a courteous and professional manner and promote a positive image of the Fire Department.
  • Successful completion of Firefighter 1 training program.
  • Basic knowledge of tools and their proper usage.
  • Ability to read, write and fluently speak the English language.
  • Ability to prepare clear and concise written reports or correspondence.
  • Must have a working knowledge of computers and how to use them
LICENSE & OTHER REQUIREMENTS:
  • High School diploma or GED.
  • Shall possess a valid State driver's license.
  • Obtain and maintain a Washington State Fire Service Training Emergency Vehicle Incident Prevention (EVIP) certification or a Washington State Commercial Driver's License.
  • Wildland firefighters shall obtain and maintain certification for Wildland Firefighter 2 per National Wildfire Coordinating Group Standards.

  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to sit at a desk and deliver group presentations.
  • Travel by various modes of transportation within the region is required.
  • Field reviews are required.
  • Attendance and participation at evening meetings may be required on a frequent basis.
