Job description

Controls Engineer - Build, troubleshoot, and elevate high-speed automation

You live where software meets steel – and you love making complex machines run smoother, faster, and smarter.

As a Controls Engineer with our client, you’ll service and start up high-speed packaging machines for the consumer industry, digging into Rockwell and Siemens code, solving real production problems, and making immediate impact on the plant floor.

You’ll also collaborate with an engineering team overseas on upgrades and rebuilds, tightening up code, validation, and documentation across a global installed base.

This is hands-on, high-visibility work at customer sites – where your PLC skills keep production running.

What You'll Work On

You’ll be the automation specialist trusted to keep high-speed packaging and other automated equipment online and optimized:

  • High-speed packaging machines for consumer products
  • Existing Rockwell ControlLogix and CompactLogix PLC platforms
  • Siemens PLC-based systems
  • HMI, drive, and motion control programs
  • SCADA systems in production environments
  • Automation upgrades, rebuilds, and change controls
  • Industrial control devices and I/O architectures
  • Customer-site production environments across multiple facilities

Key technologies include RSLogix 5000, Rockwell/Allen-Bradley PLCs (ControlLogix and CompactLogix), Siemens PLCs, Jetter controls, SCADA (FactoryTalk View SE, WonderWare, Ignition), VMware, SAP, and a wide range of industrial control devices.

Your core challenge: connect what the machine is doing to what the code is saying – and fix it fast, with discipline-level documentation.

What You'll Be Doing
  • Editing existing Rockwell ControlLogix and Siemens PLC machine code for service, start-up, and optimization
  • Adjusting and testing software parameters to improve performance and reliability
  • Performing problem analysis on complex production machines and tying root causes back to machine programming
  • Drafting test protocols and automation change controls, including validation documentation
  • Documenting troubleshooting steps and archiving updated machine software
  • Applying Sigma and root cause methodologies such as DMAIC, GEMBA, 5S, and 5 Why
  • Interfacing directly with clients and subcontractors to explain machine situations, code, and software processes
  • Downloading PLC, HMI, and drive programs and collaborating with other controls engineers to improve machine programs
  • Programming projects from process descriptions or from scratch as needed
  • Reading and working from IEC electrical diagrams and P&ID schematics
  • Commissioning motion and controls on new equipment and providing ongoing remote and field support
  • Working safely and effectively in customer production environments while occasionally lifting up to 50 lbs
What We're Looking For
  • 3–5 years of experience with high-speed machines or other automated equipment
  • Expert knowledge of Allen-Bradley and Siemens platforms, including RSLogix 5000
  • Hands-on PLC programming and motion commissioning experience for new equipment
  • Proven background in remote and field support for automated systems
  • Ability to download and manage PLC, HMI, and drive programs
  • Comfort reading and working from IEC electrical control diagrams and P&ID schematics
  • Thorough working knowledge of industrial control devices (sensors, valves, drives, servo, motion control, PLC I/O)
  • Advanced understanding of Sigma methodology and structured root cause analysis
  • BS in Electrical Engineering, Computer Programming, or related field preferred
  • SAP experience ideal
