Familiarity with editing tools like Microsoft Word's Track Changes, Google Docs, or style guides such as APA or Chicago is often required. What are volunteer proofreading and editing jobs?

Volunteer proofreading and editing jobs involve reviewing written materials for errors in grammar, spelling, punctuation, and clarity, often for non-profit organizations, community groups, or online projects. Volunteers help ensure that documents, articles, or other content are polished and error-free before publication. These roles may also include suggesting improvements, checking for consistency, and sometimes formatting text. They are ideal for people who have a passion for language and want to use their skills to support good causes.

What are some common challenges faced by volunteer proofreaders and editors, and how can they be overcome?

Volunteer proofreaders and editors often encounter challenges such as inconsistent writing styles, tight deadlines, and limited communication with authors or project coordinators. Adapting to various writing voices and organizational guidelines can be tricky, but maintaining a reference style guide and communicating proactively with the team can help. Time management is key, especially when balancing volunteer responsibilities with other commitments. Regular check-ins and feedback sessions with other volunteers or supervisors can also ensure quality and foster a supportive team environment.

Job description

We take play seriously. We're looking for curious adventurers ready to find their party, fueled by imagination and drive to build what's never been built before. At Hasbro and Wizards of the Coast, you'll collaborate with passionate teams to reimagine our iconic brands and create experiences that spark joy, connection, and community through the magic of play. This is your chance to shape legendary play that lasts a lifetime.
This Senior Game Editor position draws on your mastery of the Japanese language, drive for thoroughness and consistency, and love of collaboration. Our team of outstanding editors collaborates to ensure that all text elements of Duel Masters card sets and related materials meet our quality standards for gameplay, player experience, rules accuracy, grammar, punctuation, and clarity.
At Wizards, we believe diversity of experience is fundamental to creating accessible and fun gaming experiences for all of our players. We encourage everyone to consider being a part of our team.
What You'll Do:
  • Craft the language of Duel Masters. Lead the team of internal and external editors plus the rules manager, owning the presentation and technical implementation of each new card's wording in Japanese. Ensure all cards and mechanics in upcoming releases adhere to the team's current philosophies, balancing historical precedents with innovation and player understanding. Make the final call on all text for cards and packaging.
  • Support creative text development. Collaborate with the teams providing creative and gameplay goals of each card, and ensure card names, flavor words, and flavor text align with and reinforces those goals.
  • Keep a sharp eye on quality. Lead the proofreading process on cards and packaging for content concerns, text errors, layout inconsistencies, and typographical anomalies.
  • Shape tomorrow's Duel Masters cards today. Plan out and optimize all future work with an eye towards efficient resource management, and schedule adherence. Engage with Game Designers to understand and improve potential new game mechanics in future sets. Compose, maintain, and expand upon workflow documentation.

What You'll Bring:
  • At least 1 year of professional experience at a Senior Level in editing, game writing, or comparable work; or 3+ years of experience with some project lead experience.
  • Strong content editing and proofreading skills, plus attention to detail.
  • Deeply collaborative outlook and the confidence and trust to work with others, balanced with proven communication skills in Japanese and English.
  • Flexible, adaptable, and creative, with a constant appetite for knowledge. Ability to lead and manage multiple tasks, teams, and projects simultaneously.

Nice to Have:
  • Familiarity with Smartsheet, Microsoft Office (esp Word), Adobe Suite (Acrobat, InDesign), and/or Confluence.
  • Experience playing or interacting with Trading Card Games or various other kinds of games.
