What is a volunteer cyber security technical writer?

Volunteer Cyber Security Technical Writers are individuals who contribute their expertise in both cybersecurity and technical writing to create educational materials, documentation, guides, or articles—often for nonprofits, open-source projects, or awareness campaigns—without financial compensation. They help explain complex cybersecurity topics in a clear and accessible way to various audiences. These volunteers may write user guides, cybersecurity awareness content, or technical documentation to support organizations in improving their security posture and knowledge sharing. Their work is crucial in bridging the gap between technical experts and the general public or less technical stakeholders.

What skills and qualifications are needed to be a volunteer cyber security technical writer?

To thrive as a Volunteer Cyber Security Technical Writer, you need a solid understanding of cybersecurity concepts, strong writing skills, and preferably a background in computer science or information technology. Familiarity with technical documentation tools (such as Markdown or LaTeX), content management systems, and basic security certifications (like CompTIA Security+) are commonly required. Attention to detail, the ability to translate complex technical jargon into clear language, and strong collaboration skills help distinguish top performers in this role. These skills ensure the creation of accurate, accessible documentation that supports cybersecurity awareness and effective knowledge sharing.

How does a volunteer cyber security technical writer collaborate with subject matter experts and other team members?

As a Volunteer Cyber Security Technical Writer, you will often work closely with cybersecurity professionals, engineers, and project managers to gather accurate, up-to-date information. This collaboration usually involves interviews, reviewing technical documentation, and attending team meetings to clarify complex concepts. Maintaining open communication and asking targeted questions are key to translating technical details into clear, accessible content for different audiences. You may also coordinate with editors or other writers to ensure consistency and quality across all published materials.
