What is a volunteer chaplain?

Volunteer Chaplains are individuals who offer spiritual and emotional support in various settings such as hospitals, prisons, the military, or community organizations, without receiving monetary compensation. They typically provide counseling, lead religious services, offer prayers, and support individuals during times of crisis or need. Volunteer Chaplains often have training in pastoral care, and they work alongside staff chaplains or as part of a larger spiritual care team. Their presence helps address the spiritual and emotional well-being of people from diverse backgrounds.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a volunteer chaplain, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Volunteer Chaplain, you need a solid understanding of spiritual care, active listening, and basic counseling skills, often supported by theological education or training in pastoral care. Familiarity with hospital or institutional protocols, confidentiality guidelines, and documentation systems is typically required. Compassion, cultural sensitivity, and strong interpersonal communication help Volunteer Chaplains connect with individuals from diverse backgrounds in times of need. These skills and qualities are crucial to provide meaningful emotional and spiritual support, promote well-being, and respect the dignity of those being served.

What are some common challenges volunteer chaplains face when supporting individuals in crisis situations?

Volunteer Chaplains often encounter emotionally intense situations, such as offering comfort during grief or trauma. A major challenge is maintaining professional boundaries while providing compassionate support, which can be emotionally taxing over time. Additionally, chaplains need to be sensitive to diverse religious beliefs and backgrounds, ensuring inclusivity and respect. Ongoing training and peer support are valuable for coping with these challenges and maintaining personal well-being.

Overview
Provide Peace. Offer Support. Honor Lives.
We believe every patient deserves dignity, peace, and connection-no matter where they are on life's journey. Our Hospice Chaplains offer more than prayers and presence; they bring comfort, guidance, and meaning when it's needed most.
We're looking for a compassionate Hospice Chaplain to provide non-denominational spiritual and emotional support to patients and families facing end-of-life care. As a valued member of our interdisciplinary team, you'll help ensure that no one walks this path alone.
What You'll Do as a Hospice Chaplain:
  • Provide spiritual and emotional support to patients, families, and caregivers in alignment with their beliefs and values.
  • Offer non-denominational, inclusive care that respects all faiths, spiritual traditions, and cultural backgrounds.
  • Serve as an integral member of the interdisciplinary team, participating in patient care conferences and collaborating with nurses, social workers, aides, and medical staff.
  • Assess spiritual needs of patients and families and develop individualized spiritual care plans.
  • Conduct visits, prayers, blessings, and rituals as appropriate and requested by the patient or family.
  • Assist families during times of grief, loss, or transition, and provide bereavement support and counseling.
  • Build relationships with local faith leaders and community resources to support patients' and families' unique spiritual needs.
  • Maintain timely and accurate documentation of spiritual assessments, interventions, and outcomes.

About You
The candidate must meet one of the following educational requirements:
  • Bachelor's degree in theology, religion, human services, counseling, psychology, or sociology (or as required by state-specific regulations)
  • A minimum of one unit of ACPE-accredited Clinical Pastoral Education (CPE)

Note: Degrees from accredited institutions are preferred. If a degree is from a non-accredited college or university, AVPO approval is required prior to hire.
We Offer
Benefits for All Associates (Full-Time, Part-Time & Per Diem):
  • Competitive Pay
  • 401(k) with Company Match
  • Career Advancement Opportunities
  • National & Local Recognition Programs
  • Teammate Assistance Fund

Additional Full-Time Benefits:
  • Medical, Dental, Vision Insurance
  • Mileage Reimbursement or Fleet Vehicle Program
  • Generous Paid Time Off + 7 Paid Holidays
  • Wellness Programs (Telemedicine, Diabetes Management, Joint & Spine Concierge Care)
  • Education Support & Tuition Assistance (ASN to BSN, BSN to MSN)
  • Free Continuing Education Units (CEUs)
  • Company-paid Life & Long-Term Disability Insurance
  • Voluntary Benefits (Pet, Critical Illness, Accident, LTC)
