Job Title

Library Media Specialist

General Responsibilities

The Library Media Specialist is responsible for:

  • Establishing yearly and long-term goals for the school library media program aligned with the district's vision, mission, goals, and objectives.
  • Administering the school library media program, developing policies and procedures to assure efficient operation and services.
  • Administering the operation and use of the automated catalog and circulation system.
  • Selecting, purchasing, processing, and cataloging new materials to assure a current and balanced collection representing diverse points of view in accordance with the division materials selection policy.
  • Collaborating with classroom teachers in designing, implementing, and evaluating instruction.
  • Teaching/modeling current, innovative methodology and incorporating the Virginia Standards of Learning (SOL) for Library/Information Literacy in delivering instruction.
  • Providing group and individual instruction in information literacy skills, research strategies, and use of resources and equipment.
  • Actively promoting reading and library use through storytelling, book talks, displays, publications, reading programs, and special events as appropriate.
  • Functioning as the information leader within the school.
  • Providing formal and informal staff development opportunities in the use of information resources in a variety of formats and integration of information literacy skills throughout the curriculum.
  • Training and supervising paraprofessionals as well as adult and student volunteers.
  • Attending staff meetings and serving on staff committees as required.
  • Performing other duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Knowledge of regulations and procedures that govern school libraries; thorough understanding of the teaching and learning process; ability to provide instruction that reflects multiple perspectives and multicultural education; ability to infuse technology into curriculum; ability to work effectively with administrators, colleagues, central office, school based staff, students, parents, and community; excellent oral and written communication and human relations skills.

Education and Experience

Library Media Specialists should have a broad undergraduate education with a liberal arts background. The individual in this position must hold a minimum of a bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university and hold a teaching license with an endorsement in library media. Library Media Specialists must meet state certification requirements for both the library media specialist and the professional educator classifications.

Physical Requirements

Significant standing, walking, moving, climbing, carrying, bending, kneeling, crawling, reaching, handling, pushing, and pulling. The library environment requires light work requiring the exertion of up to 20 pounds of force occasionally and up to 10 pounds of force frequently or to move objects; ability to push mobile computer carts of up to 750 pounds; vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word; hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels; visual acuity is required for color perception, preparing and analyzing written or computer data, operation of machines, determining the accuracy and thoroughness of work, and observing general surroundings and activities. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential tasks.

Work Environment

Primarily controlled temperature and clean inside environment.
