About the Role

The role of Chief Editor provides a fantastic opportunity to truly shape the direction of this new journal and act as the ambassador for the journal through engagement with the biology research communities. The successful candidate will play a crucial role in creating and implementing the strategy for the journal, maximizing the visibility, scientific standing and quality of the journal and the impact of the research published within it. The Chief Editor will manage the internal and external editorial teams and therefore the ability to form and lead a collaborative and focused team is crucial to the role and ensuring the continued success of the journal.

Role Responsibilities

  • Lead and develop a high-performing editorial team, effectively directing day-to-day workloads, building team capability, and ensuring manuscripts are managed in accordance with journal policies, quality standards, and publication timelines

  • Demonstrates strong leadership through building effective teams, developing talent and directing work

  • Recruit, onboard, and engage external Editorial Board members, building strong professional networks and fostering collaborative relationships to support the journal's strategic objectives.

  • Demonstrates success in building networks and influencing diverse stakeholders to drive editorial excellence

  • Develop and follow a high-level strategic plan for thegrowth and development of the journal

  • Determine and take responsibility for the content published in the journal, ensuring growth in both quality and quantity

  • Handle original research papers, and working closely with other editors on all aspects of the editorial process, including manuscript selection and overseeing peer review

  • Act as the main voice to represent the journal within the external research communities, meeting regularly with authors, reviewers and external editorial board members to understand their priorities and needs

  • Work with multiple internal and external stakeholders to ensure we achieve shared goals

  • Building trusted relationships with both internal colleagues and external academic stakeholders.

  • Managing competing priorities and stakeholder expectations

  • Communicate clearly and constructively across global teams

Skills, Experience & Qualifications

Essential

  • Educated to PhD level (or equivalent), in a relevant field

  • Broad interests and knowledge in the field of biomedical technologies

  • Demonstrable editorial experience in the selection and processing of manuscripts

  • Effective time management and prioritization skills

  • A can-do approach to problem-solving

  • Influential communicator with the ability to work cooperatively with colleagues at all levels and across different portfolios

  • Willing to travel occasionally and represent BMC/Springer Nature at external events

  • Knowledge of current challenges and opportunities in scientific publishing

Desirable

  • Experience in management, supervision or mentorship of junior team members

  • Ability to build trust and credible professional relationships with members of the scientific community

  • Experience in strategic thinking and journal development

US Annualized Base Salary Range: $130,000-$145,000. This role is eligible for an annual performance-related bonus plan. The salary offer may vary based on work experience, education, skill level and equity. The US salary range does not align with the salary ranges in other countries when converted to the currency of that country.
