How does a volume graphics professional collaborate with engineers and designers during a typical project?

Professionals specializing in Volume Graphics often work closely with engineers and designers to analyze, visualize, and interpret 3D data, such as CT scans or CAD models. This collaboration typically involves providing technical support in data processing, generating detailed visualizations, and identifying structural or material issues within components. Regular meetings and feedback sessions ensure that the visual outputs meet the project’s requirements and aid in decision-making. Effective communication and a clear understanding of both technical and design goals are essential for successful teamwork in this field.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a volume graphics specialist?

To thrive as a Volume Graphics Specialist, you need expertise in 3D visualization, image analysis, and a background in fields like engineering, computer science, or industrial design. Familiarity with volume graphics software (such as VGSTUDIO MAX), CT scanning equipment, and data processing tools is typically required. Strong analytical thinking, attention to detail, and effective communication are important soft skills for interpreting data and collaborating with multidisciplinary teams. These competencies are vital for delivering accurate analyses and supporting quality assurance in industries like manufacturing, automotive, and aerospace.

Job description

Who We Are

At CPC (Colder Products Company), we’re not just connecting fluid lines – we’re connecting people, ideas, and possibilities. For nearly 50 years, we’ve been engineering cutting-edge fluid connection technologies that power industries from biopharmaceutical, thermal management (liquid cooling of electronics), medical, industrial, and chemical handling markets.

But what sets us apart? Our people.

We’re a team of problem-solvers, innovators, and forward-thinkers who thrive in a culture that values collaboration, creativity, and continuous improvement. Headquartered in Minneapolis/St. Paul, with over 700 employees in 14 countries, we’re growing fast, and we want you to grow with us!

Your Role

Are you ready to make an impact and work with a company that values your expertise, ideas, and career growth? As our next Quality Engineer - Metrology, you’ll be at the forefront of shaping our organization’s success. This isn’t just a job – it’s a career move where you’ll thrive, learn, and enjoy coming to work.

Summary: The Quality Engineering - Metrology role will have direct responsibilities to support CPC’s new product development. This position will leverage advanced industrial computed tomography (CT) scanning to perform non-destructive testing (NDT), internal and external dimensional metrology, and failure analysis on new components and finished assemblies.

Responsibilities:

CT Scan Operation & Optimization

  • System Operation: Safely and efficiently operate high-resolution industrial CT scanning systems (e.g., micro-CT, multi-source systems).
  • Scan Optimization: Determine optimal scan parameters (voltage, current, exposure, filters, voxel size) based on material density, geometry, and required resolution to minimize artifacts and maximize data quality.
  • Fixture Design: Design and fabricate custom, low-density fixtures to position complex prototype parts securely without interfering with X-ray penetration.

Metrology & Data Analysis

  • Dimensional Inspection: Perform full 3D inspections and compare CT volume data against nominal CAD models using advanced analysis software (e.g., Volume Graphics VGStudio MAX, GOM Inspect).
  • GD&T Analysis: Evaluate complex geometric features, including wall thickness, porosity, fiber orientation, and part-to-CAD variances using strict GD&T principles.
  • Reporting: Create comprehensive, visually intuitive metrology and inspection reports for design and quality engineering teams to accelerate product iterations.

New Product Development Support

  • Failure Analysis: Perform non-destructive root-cause analysis on failed prototypes or test samples to detect internal voids, cracks, assembly defects, or material delamination.
  • Design for Manufacturability (DFM): Partner with R&D engineers early in the design cycle to advise on features that optimize X-ray inspectability.

Maintenance, Quality, & Safety

  • Radiation Safety Officer: Ensure strict compliance to all local, state, and federal radiation safety regulations. Manage radiation protection plans (ALARA), monitor dosimetry, provide safety training and maintain radiation safety logs.
  • Equipment Care: Perform routine calibration, daily system checks, and preventative maintenance on X-ray tubes, detectors, and motion systems. Coordinate with equipment vendors for advanced servicing.
  • Comply with all Quality policies while continuously identifying opportunities for improvement.
  • Support the process of ISO, ASI, and other certifications deemed necessary by the business.
  • Adhere to all company safety regulations.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualification Requirements:

  • Technical Degree with a minimum of 3 years’ Quality industry experience or 5 plus years of Metrology experience in lieu of a degree.
  • 1+ years of hands-on experience operating industrial X-ray or CT scanning equipment specifically for industrial inspection or metrology.
  • Strong understanding of ASME Y14.5 geometric dimensioning and tolerancing standards.
  • Ability to thrive in a fast-paced NPD environment where priorities shift rapidly based on prototyping timelines.
  • Exposure to ISO: 9001 2015 and 13485 2016
  • Experience working with data and statistical analysis software
  • Strong communication skills

Preferred Qualifications:

  • ASNT Certification: ASNT Level II or III certification in Radiographic Testing (RT) or Computed Tomography (CT).
  • CAD Skills: Experience with CAD software (e.g., SolidWorks, Creo, NX) for fixture design and model extraction.
  • Previous Experience as a Radiation Safety Officer.
