What Is Voice Over Work?

Voice over work is any work where a person narrates over video, film, TV commercial, audio books, e-learning courses, radio commercial, or other media. Your duties vary depending on the type of work you do, but many of your responsibilities carry over between industries and media. You read scripts for projects, sit in audio recording studios to record multiple takes, and take direction from audio engineers, directors, and producers. Some voice over work, such as providing commentary on a film, is done by the actors or directors themselves, while other work is done by professional voice actors.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Voice Over artist, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Voice Over artist, you need excellent vocal control, clear diction, and the ability to interpret scripts, often supported by acting or vocal training. Familiarity with audio recording software, microphones, and sound editing tools is typically required, along with a quality demo reel. Strong communication, adaptability, and creativity help you connect with diverse audiences and effectively convey different tones or characters. These skills ensure you can deliver professional, engaging performances that meet client needs in competitive media industries.

What are some common challenges voice over artists face when working with remote clients, and how can they overcome them?

Voice over artists often collaborate with clients remotely, which can present challenges such as unclear direction, miscommunication about tone or pacing, and technical issues with audio files. To overcome these, it’s important to ask clarifying questions, confirm expectations in writing, and share sample recordings for feedback before final delivery. Maintaining a professional home studio setup and being responsive to client requests also helps ensure smooth collaboration and high-quality results.

What are voice over artists?

Voice over artists are professionals who use their voices to narrate, act, or provide commentary for a variety of media, including commercials, films, television shows, animations, video games, and audiobooks. They bring scripts to life by conveying emotion, personality, and information solely through vocal performance. Voice over work often requires versatility, clear diction, and the ability to interpret scripts creatively. Many voice over artists work freelance, recording from home studios or on location, and may specialize in specific genres or character types.

What You'll Do

  • Record short voiceovers (15-90 seconds) for product videos, social ads, explainer content, and in-app guidance.
  • Collaborate with content, design, and product to refine tone, pacing, and emphasis for different audiences.
  • Maintain a consistent brand voice: warm, encouraging, plain-spoken, never salesy.
  • Provide clean, broadcast-quality audio with quick turnarounds and clear file naming.
  • (Optional) Partner with us on responsible voice-clone licensing for micro-edits and rapid updates.

What You'll Bring

  • Proven VO experience with consumer tech or education content (please include links).
  • Ability to perform natural, trustworthy, and compassionate reads; excellent diction and pacing.
  • Access to a treated recording space and pro gear; comfortable delivering print-ready WAV/MP3.
  • Strong collaboration: open to direction, fast iterations, and script tweaks.
  • Respect for privacy and empathy for older or non-technical users.

Nice to Have

  • Experience voicing product UI prompts or onboarding.
  • Comfort with pronouncing archival/media terms (VHS, Super 8, MiniDV, negatives).
  • Familiarity with brand guidelines and usage rights; willingness to discuss AI voice licensing.

How We Work

  • Flexible hours, outcome-focused.
  • Remote-friendly, with preference for hybrid collaboration in Charleston, SC for periodic sessions.
  • PT/FT/Contract all considered; contract-to-hire and equity are possible.

Please audition by attaching an MP3 to an email to people@heirloom.cloud.
