The Senior VMware Systems Support role provides advanced Systems Administration support, including the installation, maintenance, troubleshooting, implementation, and optimization of VMware infrastructure across on-premises and cloud environments. This role is responsible for supporting infrastructure modernization initiatives, workload migrations, disaster recovery planning and testing, automation, and operational improvements while ensuring the availability, performance, and security of enterprise virtualization platforms.

Operational responsibilities include incident and problem resolution, infrastructure implementation, compliance support, system optimization, testing, staging, documentation development, and operational readiness activities. The role serves as a technical lead for infrastructure projects and collaborates with architecture, engineering, security, and operations teams to deliver scalable and resilient VMware solutions.

Core Responsibilities

Leadership & Technical Guidance

  • Serves as a senior technical resource for VMware infrastructure projects and operational support activities.

  • Provides technical guidance and mentorship to junior team members.

  • Leads technical workstreams and supports project planning, implementation, and transition activities.

  • Promotes operational best practices and continuous improvement across virtualization platforms.

Business & Systems Alignment

  • Applies knowledge of business and technical requirements to design, implement, and support VMware solutions.

  • Supports infrastructure initiatives that align with organizational objectives and operational requirements.

  • Collaborateswith cross-functional teams to ensure infrastructure solutions meet performance, security, compliance, and availability requirements.

Infrastructure & Technical Responsibilities

  • Provides advanced administration and support for VMware environments, includingESXi, vCenter,vSAN, and related technologies.

  • Performs capacity planning, performance analysis, lifecycle management, and system optimization.

  • Troubleshoots complex VMware infrastructure issues and performs root cause analysis.

  • Supports operating system administration for Windows and Linux workloads hosted on VMware platforms.

  • Assists with architecture reviews and infrastructure design activities supporting modernization efforts.

Project Responsibilities

  • Participates in the planning, design, implementation, and support of enterprise infrastructure projects.

  • Leads workload migration activities between legacy and modernized infrastructure platforms, including:

  • On-premises to on-premises migrations

  • On-premisesto cloud migrations

  • Cloud transformation initiatives

  • Hybrid infrastructure deployments

  • Developsimplementation plans, migration procedures, validation plans, and rollback strategies.

  • Assessesand documents current-state VMware environments and provides recommendations for improvement.

  • Supports server consolidation, virtualization, and infrastructure modernization initiatives.

  • Coordinates implementation activities with infrastructure, security, networking, storage, and application teams.

  • Ensures new solutions are effectively transitioned into operational support.

Automation & Optimization Responsibilities

  • Implements automation solutions to improve operational efficiency, consistency, and service reliability.

  • LeveragesPowerCLI, PowerShell, Python, Ansible, and similar automation tools to streamline administrative tasks.

  • Automates provisioning, monitoring, reporting, compliance validation, patching, and routine maintenance activities.

  • Optimizes enterprise virtual environments through performance tuning, capacity management, and resource utilization improvements.

  • Develops operational dashboards, reporting, and monitoring solutions to support proactive infrastructure management.

Disaster Recovery Responsibilities

  • Supports disaster recovery planning, implementation, and ongoing maintenance activities.

  • Develops and maintains recovery procedures, technical documentation, and disaster recovery runbooks.

  • Participates in disaster recovery exercises, failover testing, validation activities, and recovery assessments.

  • Assists in ensuring Recovery Time Objectives (RTO) and Recovery Point Objectives (RPO) are met.

  • Evaluates backup, replication, and recovery solutions supporting VMware environments.

  • Identifies recovery risks and recommends improvements to increase resilience and recovery readiness.

Operational Excellence & Documentation

  • Creates and maintains technical documentation, implementation guides, standard operating procedures, and support runbooks.

  • ImplementsVMware and infrastructure best practices to improve availability, supportability, security, and operational maturity.

  • Supports compliance, audit, and security initiatives.

  • Recommendsandimplementsprocess improvements that enhance operational efficiency and service quality.

You will be successful in this role if you have:

Education

  • Required: BA/BS degree and 6+ years of relevant experience OR equivalent combination of education and experience.

  • Preferred:Bachelor's degree in Information Technology, Computer Science, Engineering, or related field.

Experience

  • Strong experience administering enterprise VMware environments and virtualization technologies.

  • Experience implementing and supporting VMware infrastructure solutions in medium to large enterprise environments.

  • Proven experience planning and executing workload migrations between legacy and modernized infrastructure platforms.

  • Experience supporting cloud migration and hybrid-cloud initiatives utilizing Microsoft Azure, Oracle Cloud Infrastructure (OCI), AWS, or similar platforms.

  • Hands-on experience with VMware vSphere,ESXi, vCenter, clustering, and high-availability technologies.

  • Experience supporting disaster recovery planning, recovery testing, and business continuity initiatives.

  • Experience developing and maintaining technical documentation, implementation procedures, and operational runbooks.

  • Extensive experience optimizing enterprise virtual environments using automation and scripting tools.

  • Strong experience withPowerCLI, PowerShell, Python, Ansible, or similar automation platforms.

  • Experience with Microsoft Windows Server technologies, including clustering and high-availability solutions.

  • Experience administering enterprise Linux platforms, including Red Hat Enterprise Linux and Oracle Linux.

  • Experience supporting enterprise storage, backup, monitoring, and networking technologies.

  • Strong troubleshooting, problem-solving, and root cause analysis skills.

  • Experience supporting infrastructure modernization, virtualization, or datacenter migration projects.
