Job Description:

The North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) is seeking a VMware Environment Specialist to support the NC FAST (Families Accessing Services through Technology) application development environment. This is a contract position requiring a skilled Linux/Windows Administrator with strong VMware experience to maintain and support UCS servers in a dynamic, fast-paced environment.

Note: This is not a remote position. The selected candidate must be based in Raleigh, NC, and be available to travel to the Charlotte data center as needed.


Key Responsibilities:
  • Install, maintain, and upgrade internal software systems.
  • Manage user access and passwords.
  • Propose and implement system enhancements for improved reliability and performance.
  • Monitor system usage and performance.
  • Train personnel on system usage.
  • Maintain VMware-based environments and monitor virtual server infrastructure health.
  • Travel to Raleigh and Charlotte data centers for hardware troubleshooting.
  • Research and recommend software/hardware products.
  • Provide hardware specifications based on application needs.
  • Participate in 24/7 team operations, including on-call support every other week and occasional weekend/holiday work.
  • Manage multiple priorities in a high-demand environment.

Required Qualifications:
  • 8+ years of experience as a System Administrator.
  • Expertise in VMware vCenter 8.0 or newer.
  • Experience with Nagios monitoring.
  • Strong background in UNIX/Windows OS administration.
  • Experience collaborating with Security, Audit, DBA, Networking, and Development teams.
  • Proven ability to support time-critical customer environments.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication.
  • Experience with:
    • Red Hat Enterprise Linux
    • Windows Server
    • SQL Server
    • Pure Storage and VSAN
  • Proficiency in shell scripting.
  • Ability to implement standardized processes and controls across regions.
  • Familiarity with Microsoft Office tools (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Visio).

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Certifications in Linux/Windows server administration.
  • Experience managing UCS blade servers.
