What is a virtual sales representative?

A Virtual Sales representative is a professional who sells products or services remotely, typically using phone calls, video conferencing, email, and other digital communication tools. Unlike traditional sales roles that require face-to-face meetings, virtual sales reps interact with clients and prospects online or over the phone. This role often involves lead generation, product demonstrations, negotiations, and closing deals without in-person contact. Virtual Sales is becoming increasingly popular as more companies embrace remote work and digital sales strategies.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a virtual sales professional?

To thrive as a Virtual Sales professional, you need strong sales acumen, product knowledge, and excellent digital communication skills, often supported by a background in business or marketing. Familiarity with CRM platforms like Salesforce, video conferencing tools, and digital sales enablement software is typically required. Outstanding relationship-building, active listening, and self-motivation set top performers apart in remote sales environments. These skills ensure effective client engagement, streamlined sales processes, and the ability to consistently achieve targets in a virtual setting.

How does a virtual sales professional typically collaborate with other teams to close deals?

Virtual Sales professionals frequently work closely with marketing, customer support, and product teams to ensure a seamless customer experience. They often coordinate with marketing to align messaging and generate qualified leads, and they may consult with product specialists to address client-specific technical questions. Regular communication through virtual meetings and shared platforms is essential for managing the sales pipeline and staying updated on product developments. This collaborative approach helps Virtual Sales professionals provide comprehensive solutions, overcome client objections, and ultimately close deals more efficiently.

Understanding these differences helps job seekers target the right roles based on their skills and preferences.

Are virtual sales jobs legit?

Virtual sales jobs are legitimate positions where sales professionals work remotely to sell products or services, often using phone, email, or video conferencing tools. They typically require strong communication skills and may involve training or certifications, but as with any job, it is important to verify the employer's credibility before applying.

How do I get into virtual sales?

To get into virtual sales, you should develop strong communication and sales skills, often through experience or training in customer service or sales roles. Familiarity with digital communication tools like CRM software, video conferencing platforms, and social media is also beneficial, along with a proactive approach to networking and applying for remote sales positions.

About Orum

Orumโ€™s AI-powered suite frees salespeople to do what they do best: connect, listen, and sell. Our products gives sales teams everything they need to connect faster, sell smarter, and grow revenue. From intelligent dialing and real-time conversation insights to AI-driven coaching and virtual sales floors, Orum is powering thousands of sales teams to have more meaningful conversations and turn every call into measurable impact. Companies who use Orum connect 5x faster and book millions in new pipeline every month.

We are a team of builders and dreamers creating a future where work feels more meaningful and connected. If youโ€™re excited to change how the world sells, join us. For more information, visit https://www.orum.com/

The Role

Weโ€™re looking for a Staff Full-Stack Engineer to lead end-to-end delivery and drive technical direction across a real-time, high-scale product surface. Youโ€™ll architect, build, and evolve systems spanning backend services and modern web UIs that power live calling workflows (e.g., SIP/event-driven softswitch paths, WebSocket-driven experiences, and streaming audio processing), while mentoring engineers and raising the bar for simplicity, performance, and reliability. Youโ€™ll partner closely with Product and Designโ€”your technical judgment will directly shape the roadmap as we treat engineering, product, and design as equal partners.

The Product Platform Team

The Product Platform team sits at the center of Orumโ€™s architecture, building the foundational systems that power every product. Youโ€™ll work on CRM integrations (Salesforce, Outreach), identity and access, and the data flows that keep customer systems accurate and in sync. The team also drives AI-powered prospect enrichment, combining internal and external data to create smarter, continuously improving prospect profiles. Your work has massive leverage, accelerating every team, enabling the platform to scale seamlessly, and unlocking AI-driven innovation by creating the reliable foundations and data flows needed to build smarter, more intelligent products across Orum.

What Youโ€™ll Do
  • Own complex product areas end-to-endโ€”from discovery and design to implementation, rollout, and iterationโ€”operating across Node/TypeScript backends and React frontends.

  • Lead architecture and system design for real-time, high-volume workflows (e.g., call routing on an event-driven SIP softswitch, UI over WebSockets, streaming audio for speech recognition).

  • Author clear technical design docs, set standards for code quality, testing, performance, and observability, and ensure designs scale simply as we grow.

  • Collaborate cross-functionally with PM, Design, and other engineers to translate ambiguous requirements into intuitive, performant experiences; make crisp trade-offs and document decisions.

  • Mentor and uplevel engineers through design reviews, pairing, and feedback; model engineering excellence and foster a culture of craftsmanship and clarity.

  • Improve developer experience (DevEx) and reliability by influencing APIs, data contracts, testing strategies, and progressive delivery practices across teams.

  • Participate in on-call and help uphold operational excellence for the areas you own.

What Youโ€™ll Bring
  • 8+ years of professional software engineering experience, including demonstrated Staff-level scope (cross-team technical leadership, strategy, and delivery).

  • Proven track record owning products/features through the full lifecycleโ€”from discovery to deployment and iteration.

  • Expertise with TypeScript/Node.js and modern frontend frameworks (e.g., React), plus strong SQL fundamentals with an RDBMS such as PostgreSQL.

  • Depth in distributed systems or real-time application patterns (e.g., WebSockets/streaming/PubSub), and performance optimization across the stack.

  • Strong product mindset and communication: you simplify complexity, align stakeholders, and connect technical decisions to user and business impact.

Nice to Have
  • Cloud infrastructure experience with one of GCP, AWS, or Azure; familiarity with CI/CD and progressive delivery practices.

  • Experience in telephony, SIP softswitches (e.g., FreeSWITCH), or adjacent real-time/event-driven domains.

  • Familiarity with our stack: NodeJS with TypeScript, React, PostgreSQL, Google Cloud Platform, and FreeSWITCH.

How We Work
  • Engineering, Product, and Design partner as equals; we value simplicity, clarity, and fast, iterative delivery.

Tech Stack
  • NodeJS + TypeScript; React; PostgreSQL; Google Cloud Platform; FreeSWITCH.

Location
  • Either San Francisco Bay Area or Austin, Texas

Compensation & Benefits
  • Flexible Vacation Policy.

  • Orum Days Off (first Friday each month, two weeks off at year end, and additional observed holidays).

  • 90% coverage for employees and dependents for medical, dental, and vision.

  • Online behavioral health and virtual healthcare options.

  • Parental leave

  • Life Insurance and AD&D coverage.

  • 401(k) savings plan.

  • Meaningful stock options.

  • $1,000 equipment reimbursement (yours to keep).

  • Company retreats and meetups to connect in person.

  • Company ERG โ€” Women of Orum (WOO).
