What is a virtual product manager?

Virtual Product Managers are professionals who oversee the development and lifecycle of digital products while working remotely, often coordinating teams and stakeholders from different locations. They are responsible for defining product strategies, gathering requirements, prioritizing features, and ensuring successful product launches. Virtual Product Managers use digital tools to collaborate effectively, manage workflows, and maintain clear communication with cross-functional teams. Their role is critical in today's increasingly remote and distributed work environments.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a virtual product manager?

To thrive as a Virtual Product Manager, you need expertise in product lifecycle management, market analysis, and strategic planning, often supported by a degree in business, engineering, or a related field. Familiarity with tools like Jira, Trello, Agile methodologies, and product analytics platforms such as Google Analytics is typically required. Strong communication, leadership, and remote collaboration skills help drive cross-functional teams and maintain alignment across digital channels. These skills ensure effective product development, clear stakeholder engagement, and successful outcomes in a remote work environment.

How do virtual product managers typically collaborate with remote and cross-functional teams?

Virtual Product Managers often work with distributed teams that may span different time zones and disciplines, such as engineering, design, and marketing. Effective collaboration relies on regular virtual meetings, clear documentation, and the use of project management tools to keep everyone aligned. Building strong relationships and maintaining open communication channels are crucial to ensure that priorities are understood and progress stays on track. Adapting to various communication styles and being proactive in resolving misunderstandings can help Virtual Product Managers foster a productive remote team environment.

Job description

The Role

Build trusted AI experiences that support healthcare workflows and members of the care team such as pharmacists, nurses, and the patients themselves.

At Wolters Kluwer Health, the UpToDate suite supports millions of clinical decisions every day. As healthcare organizations adopt AI at scale, we are building tools that fit naturally into care delivery -- supporting clinical judgment, reducing friction, and helping care teams work more effectively.

As Senior Product Manager, Clinical AI Workflows, you will play a core role in developing AI-enabled experiences for a range of healthcare professionals and use cases that support patient care. Working under product leadership, you will own discovery and delivery for defined capabilities; partner across clinical, technical, design, customer-facing, operational, and commercial teams; and help translate complex workflow needs into practical, responsible AI product experiences.

This role focuses on practical innovation: building solutions that deliver measurable value while meeting the trust, safety, regulatory, and implementation expectations of high-stakes healthcare environments.

What You'll Do

  • Drive discovery and delivery for defined AI-enabled clinical workflow capabilities that support adoption, efficiency, customer value, and measurable outcomes.
  • Develop a deep understanding of clinical and care team workflows-including operational challenges, adoption barriers, integration needs, regulatory requirements, and appropriate human oversight.
  • Shape AI experiences that support workflow fit, transparency, decision-making, and responsible use.
  • Conduct customer conversations, experiments, and pilots that generate feedback, analytics, and operational signals.
  • Define success metrics tied to adoption, workflow impact, satisfaction, efficiency, trust, business outcomes, and user value.
  • Partner with engineering, clinical, UX, analytics, customer-facing teams, marketing, and other stakeholders throughout the product lifecycle.
  • Make decisions that balance customer value, workflow fit, trust, operational complexity, cost, and risk.
  • Communicate product roadmap, priorities, risks, and tradeoffs clearly across teams and leadership.

What You'll Bring

  • 5+ years of product management experience in healthcare, enterprise SaaS, workflow, or data-driven products.
  • Strong product discovery and execution skills, including customer research, experimentation, roadmap development, and metrics-driven decision-making.
  • Experience translating complex customer and workflow problems into product requirements, experiments, and measurable outcomes.
  • Ability to partner closely with engineering, design, clinical, commercial, and customer-facing teams from discovery through delivery.
  • Strong communication, analytical thinking, stakeholder management, and influencing skills.
  • Curiosity and learning agility around AI, automation, and emerging technologies.
  • Ability to operate in ambiguity and make sound product decisions in complex, regulated healthcare environments.

Preferred Background

  • Experience leading AI-enabled or data-driven products from concept through launch.
  • Practical understanding of generative AI, workflow automation, recommendation systems, retrieval-based systems, or applied machine learning concepts.
  • Experience with clinical workflows, care team workflows, patient education, healthcare content, or clinical decision-support products.
  • Familiarity with human-in-the-loop workflows, responsible AI practices, or AI evaluation approaches.

What Success Looks Like

  • Product teams have clear priorities and validated learnings for AI-enabled clinical workflow opportunities.
  • New capabilities improve workflow fit, user satisfaction, adoption, and measurable customer value.
  • AI experiences are designed with appropriate transparency, human oversight, and responsible use practices.
  • Product decisions balance customer value, business impact, operational complexity, cost, and risk.
