What is a virtual product manager?

Virtual Product Managers are professionals who oversee the development and lifecycle of digital products while working remotely, often coordinating teams and stakeholders from different locations. They are responsible for defining product strategies, gathering requirements, prioritizing features, and ensuring successful product launches. Virtual Product Managers use digital tools to collaborate effectively, manage workflows, and maintain clear communication with cross-functional teams. Their role is critical in today's increasingly remote and distributed work environments.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a virtual product manager?

To thrive as a Virtual Product Manager, you need expertise in product lifecycle management, market analysis, and strategic planning, often supported by a degree in business, engineering, or a related field. Familiarity with tools like Jira, Trello, Agile methodologies, and product analytics platforms such as Google Analytics is typically required. Strong communication, leadership, and remote collaboration skills help drive cross-functional teams and maintain alignment across digital channels. These skills ensure effective product development, clear stakeholder engagement, and successful outcomes in a remote work environment.

How do virtual product managers typically collaborate with remote and cross-functional teams?

Virtual Product Managers often work with distributed teams that may span different time zones and disciplines, such as engineering, design, and marketing. Effective collaboration relies on regular virtual meetings, clear documentation, and the use of project management tools to keep everyone aligned. Building strong relationships and maintaining open communication channels are crucial to ensure that priorities are understood and progress stays on track. Adapting to various communication styles and being proactive in resolving misunderstandings can help Virtual Product Managers foster a productive remote team environment.

What is the difference between Virtual Product Manager vs Product Owner?

AspectVirtual Product ManagerProduct Owner
CredentialsTypically requires a bachelor's degree in business, marketing, or related field; certifications like Scrum Product Owner or Pragmatic Product Management are commonOften holds similar certifications such as Scrum Product Owner; may also have domain-specific knowledge

While their roles overlap, the Virtual Product Manager has a broader strategic scope, whereas the Product Owner is more tactical and team-focused.

Job description

Description:
Remote
Our client seeks an experienced Product Manager to lead the strategy, roadmap, and delivery of AI-powered workforce solutions that improve manager effectiveness and enable scalable people leadership. This role resides within an AI Enablement team that determines how far business and HR technology initiatives can progress without software engineering involvement. The Product Manager will partner with People Technology, PART, HR, Engineering, and Business stakeholders to identify opportunities where AI, workflow automation, configuration, and emerging technologies can solve business problems while minimizing custom development. A primary focus will be driving the vision and execution of a strategic initiative that provides managers with AI-powered insights, recommendations, and decision support across the employee lifecycle. The ideal candidate blends product management expertise, AI strategy, business process design, and workforce technology knowledge to shape AI-enabled employee and manager experiences.
Due to client requirements, applicants must be willing and able to work on a w2 basis. For our w2 consultants, we offer a great benefits package that includes Medical, Dental, and Vision benefits, 401k with company matching, and life insurance.
Rate: $80.00 to $90.00/hr. w2
Responsibilities:
  • Define and own the product roadmap for AI-enabled workforce and manager experiences.
  • Identify opportunities to improve manager effectiveness through AI, automation, and intelligent workflows.
  • Translate business objectives into scalable AI-enabled solutions and product strategies.
  • Partner with HR, People Technology, PART, and business leaders to prioritize investments based on business value and organizational impact.
  • Lead discovery, prioritization, and delivery of AI-powered capabilities across performance management, goal management, hiring and talent evaluation, employee 360 insights, and manager effectiveness.
  • Establish frameworks, standards, and guardrails for AI solution adoption, including use case evaluation criteria, implementation playbooks, and operational procedures.
  • Define success metrics, adoption KPIs, and value measurement frameworks.
  • Evaluate emerging AI technologies such as Claude, Gemini, GPT, agentic AI, MCP frameworks, and other workforce AI capabilities.
  • Partner with technical teams to validate new use cases, experiments, and proofs of concept.
  • Act as the primary liaison between business stakeholders and technical delivery teams, defining configuration versus engineering work and facilitating alignment and executive communication.

Experience Requirements:
  • 5+ years of Product Management experience within enterprise software, HR technology, AI platforms, or digital transformation initiatives.
  • Experience leading complex cross-functional programs with multiple stakeholders.
  • Strong understanding of workforce technology ecosystems including platforms such as Workday, ServiceNow, Salesforce, and collaboration platforms.
  • Experience defining roadmaps, business cases, KPIs, and product success metrics.
  • Strong communication and stakeholder management skills.
  • Experience working in Agile environments.
  • Preferred: Experience with Generative AI, AI Agents, MCP protocols, prompt engineering, or conversational AI solutions.
  • Preferred: Background in HR Technology, Employee Experience, Talent Management, or Workforce Analytics.
