What Does a Virtual Librarian Do?

A virtual librarian's primary responsibilities are to assist patrons in searching for materials through an online library, provide resources through technology, and request electronic holdings from other databases when needed. Your duties include recommending materials for purchase or lease to benefit existing programs, offering a high level of customer service, using scripted and custom responses, and staying updated on current electric holdings available. A virtual librarian works remotely and acts as a reference through live chat or email. You may work for an academic library by helping students and faculty with searches for books and articles.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Virtual Librarian, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Virtual Librarian, you need expertise in information science, cataloging, and research methods, typically supported by a Master’s in Library Science (MLS) or equivalent. Familiarity with digital library platforms, integrated library systems (ILS), and online reference tools is essential. Strong communication skills, adaptability, and customer service orientation set outstanding virtual librarians apart. These abilities are crucial for effectively assisting patrons remotely and ensuring seamless access to digital resources.

How does a Virtual Librarian typically support users and collaborate with other library staff remotely?

As a Virtual Librarian, you will primarily interact with users via online chat, email, video calls, and digital platforms to assist with reference questions, research guidance, and access to digital resources. Collaboration with other library staff often takes place through regular virtual meetings, shared project management tools, and coordinated digital outreach initiatives. You'll also contribute to developing online learning materials and may participate in virtual programming. Strong communication skills and comfort with technology are essential for effective teamwork and user support in this remote environment.

What are virtual librarians?
