Job description

Job Title: Virtual Teacher

Position Function: Virtual Teacher will be responsible for facilitating learning and maintaining academic progress, discipline, and records for students. Works with parents and students to provide and implement classroom education in a virtual setting to meet the needs of students. Teaching in a virtual setting requires a strong educational background and a firm understanding of how best practices from a regular classroom can be applied to this model. Virtual Teachers must be comfortable using technology and supporting new users of technology.

Essential Performance Responsibilities:

  • Supports parents and students with basic computer set-up, navigation, virtual curriculum software and troubleshooting
  • Instruct through lectures, discussions and demonstrations in one or more subjects such as English, mathematics, or social studies
  • Establish clear objectives for all lessons, units and projects, and communicate those objectives to students
  • Collaborate and communicate with staff to meet the educational needs of students
  • Create, administer, and grade tests to evaluate student progress
  • Establish and enforce rules and procedures which help to maintain order in the virtual classroom
  • Observe, evaluate, and prepare reports on the progress of students. Discusses students' problems and progress with parents and staff
  • Participate in faculty and professional meetings, educational conferences, and teacher training workshops
  • Prepare classroom instructions to promote students' success on state assessment exams
  • Observes, enforces and is directed by the policies, rules, and regulations adopted by the school district
  • Responds in a timely manner to parent/ student inquiries via phone and/or e-mail during the regular work week

Additional Duties: Assists with additional duties as assigned by supervisors

Equipment: Must be able to use basic office equipment such as computers, copiers, scanners, and fax machine. Must always comply with WPS guidelines for equipment use

Travel: Limited travel between schools and central offices may be required.

Physical and Mental Demands:

  • Must be able to respond rapidly in emergency situations
  • Must be able to stand for long periods of time, bend, twist balance, stoop, climb steps, reach overhead, lift up to 20 pounds

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Must be comfortable using technology and supporting new users of technology
  • Ability to learn new technology tools quickly (e.g., database and web-based tools)
  • Ability to support students/parents with basic computer set-up and navigation
  • Knowledge of current teaching methods and educational pedagogy
  • Knowledge of applicable federal and state laws regarding education and students
  • Ability and patience to work interactively with students
  • Skill in organization, time management, communication, and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to deliver teaching instruction in accordance with improved curriculum and standards
  • Excellent skills in verbal and written communication
  • Ability to understand the individual needs of each student
  • Ability to effectively use Microsoft Outlook and the student information system

Interrelations:

  • Contact with students, instructional staff, administrators and the community.
  • Will be working with a diverse population requiring the ability to handle all situations with tact and diplomacy.
  • Must exhibit a professional manner and maintain a positive attitude at all times.

Employee Punctuality and Appearance:

  • In order for schools to operate effectively, employees are expected to perform all assigned duties and work all scheduled hours during each designated workday, unless the employee has received approved leave.
  • Any deviation from assigned hours must have prior approval from the employee's supervisor or building administrator.
  • All employees are required to report to work dressed in a manner that reflects a positive image of USD 259 and is appropriate for their position.

Qualification Profile:

  • Current Kansas State teaching license required
  • Classroom teaching experience preferred
  • Experience in an innovative learning environment preferred
