Job Summary

Hamilton Health Center is seeking a Breastfeeding Peer Counselor to provide education, encouragement, and support to WIC participants throughout their breastfeeding journey.

This role is rooted in shared experience and community connection. As a Peer Counselor, you will support mothers by offering guidance, building confidence, and helping them navigate common breastfeeding challenges through both in-person and virtual interactions.

Key Responsibilities
  • Provide basic breastfeeding education and ongoing support to WIC mothers

  • Maintain a caseload and conduct routine follow-ups (in-person, phone, virtual, home, or hospital visits)

  • Assist with common breastfeeding concerns and provide encouragement and guidance

  • Document all participant interactions accurately and in compliance with program guidelines

  • Refer participants to Nutritionists or supervisors when needs exceed scope of role

  • Support prenatal classes and breastfeeding support groups

  • Connect participants with community resources and services

  • Participate in required trainings, meetings, and peer counselor sessions

  • Assist with clinic operations, including satellite clinic support as needed

  • Maintain confidentiality and ensure compliance with all program standards

QualificationsRequired
  • High school diploma or GED

  • Personal experience successfully breastfeeding at least one child (per PA WIC guidelines)

  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills

  • Basic computer proficiency

  • Reliable transportation

Preferred
  • Experience in WIC or a similar community-based role

  • Familiarity with the PENN Data System

  • Bilingual (Spanish)

Work Environment
  • Work may take place at clinic sites, virtually, in participant homes, or hospital settings

  • Participation in satellite clinics may be required
