What is a Virtual CFO?

A virtual CFO has many of the same duties as a traditional chief financial officer, but they work remotely as a third-party provider. They typically deal with smaller organizations that don’t have an executive in this position or the budget to hire one. They handle the financial dealings of a business, often using cloud applications to manage their affairs. They typically offer a suite of services ranging from financial planning to bookkeeping to budgeting. Some virtual CFOs work on an ongoing basis for a client whereas others work on a single project.

How does a Virtual CFO typically interact with internal teams and external stakeholders?

A Virtual CFO collaborates closely with internal teams such as accounting, operations, and executive leadership, often through virtual meetings and cloud-based platforms. They also interact with external stakeholders like auditors, investors, and banks to provide financial insights and ensure compliance. Clear communication and proactive reporting are key, as the Virtual CFO must bridge gaps between departments and align financial strategy with business goals. This collaborative approach helps streamline decision-making and supports organizational growth.

What is a Virtual CFO?

A Virtual CFO (Chief Financial Officer) is a finance professional who provides strategic financial guidance and management to businesses on a part-time or remote basis. Unlike a traditional in-house CFO, a Virtual CFO works with multiple clients, helping them with budgeting, forecasting, financial planning, and reporting. This service is especially popular with small and mid-sized businesses that need expert financial advice but do not require a full-time executive. By leveraging technology, Virtual CFOs can deliver their services efficiently and cost-effectively.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Virtual CFO, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Virtual CFO, you need a solid background in accounting, financial analysis, and strategic planning, often supported by a CPA or similar finance qualification. Familiarity with cloud-based accounting platforms, financial modeling tools, and ERP systems is typically required. Excellent communication, problem-solving, and relationship-building skills help you effectively advise clients and manage remote teams. These capabilities enable Virtual CFOs to provide strategic financial leadership, ensure regulatory compliance, and drive business growth for their clients.

Job description

CHIEF FINANCIAL OFFICER (CFO)

Established Roofing Contractor | On-site | Sarasota, FL | Full-Time | W-2

Location: On-site in Sarasota, FL. Candidates within approximately one hour commuting distance are encouraged to apply.

OWN THE FINANCIAL SIDE OF A COMPANY BUILT TO GROW

You've spent your career in construction or trade-based finance. You know WIP schedules, job costing, and what a clean month-end close looks like. What you want now is full ownership: a seat at the leadership table where the numbers are yours, the systems are yours to improve, and the decisions you inform actually get made.

A well-established Southwest Florida roofing contractor with three operating divisions serving residential and commercial clients is hiring a Chief Financial Officer. The company runs on a structured operating system with weekly leadership meetings, scorecards, and clear accountability, and is preparing for its next stage of growth, including a migration from server-based ERP accounting software to a modern cloud ERP platform.

WHAT YOU WILL OWN

  • The books: monthly close, financial statements, and reporting accuracy across all three divisions
  • WIP schedules, job costing, and revenue recognition for construction operations
  • Cash flow forecasting, annual budgets, and division-level performance reporting
  • The company's insurance and risk program, banking relationships, and surety bonding
  • The evaluation and migration from the current server-based ERP to a modern cloud ERP platform (for example, Sage Intacct or a comparable solution)

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Deliver accurate, timely financial data and insight to ownership and leadership for decision-making
  • Manage accounting processes, internal controls, and financial procedures, working with existing bookkeeping staff
  • Lead budgeting, forecasting, and cash flow management
  • Own job costing and construction-related financial reporting by division
  • Lead the ERP evaluation and cloud migration project from selection through implementation
  • Manage insurance renewals, banking relationships, and bonding capacity
  • Report to the CEO and participate in weekly leadership meetings
  • Collaborate with operations and sales leadership to support company goals
  • Maintain confidentiality, professionalism, and a high level of financial accuracy

QUALIFICATIONS

  • 7 years or more of proven CFO, Controller, or senior finance leadership experience
  • Construction, roofing, trades, or service-industry finance experience strongly preferred
  • Hands-on experience with construction ERP or accounting systems; experience leading or participating in an ERP migration to a cloud platform is a significant plus
  • Strong command of WIP reporting, job costing, budgeting, cash flow, and financial controls
  • Experience managing insurance programs, banking relationships, or surety bonding preferred
  • Ability to work closely with ownership and senior leadership
  • Strong analytical, organizational, and communication skills
  • High level of confidentiality, professionalism, and discretion
  • Must be able to pass a pre-employment background screening and drug screening upon a conditional job offer

PAY AND BENEFITS

  • Full-time, W-2 employment
  • Pay: $100.000 to $120.000 per year, based on experience
  • Executive-level leadership opportunity with long-term growth potential
  • Benefits package to be discussed during the interview process
  • Drug-free workplace

WHY THIS COMPANY?

An established Southwest Florida roofing contractor with strong local roots, experienced leadership, real systems, and a clear plan for growth. If you are a finance leader who wants full ownership of the numbers and the chance to build the financial infrastructure for the company's next stage, apply in confidence today.
