Job#: 3039123
Job Description:
AI Automation Engineer
Location: Remote
Work Type: Contract
Role Overview
We are seeking an Automation Engineer to support key helpdesk initiatives. This role involves the full redesign and replacement of an existing Slack-based helpdesk automation product. You will enhance and expand an in-house application foundation, focusing on building custom automation capabilities within internal systems. This position offers a high level of ownership and flexibility for creative problem-solving in a fast-paced environment.
What You'll Do
Design, build, and deploy AI agents and chatbots that automate internal workflows, customer interactions, and operational processes.
Develop and maintain automated workflows, integrations, and custom solutions across ITSM platforms (Jira Service Management, or similar) to enhance service delivery and self-service capabilities.
Optimize customer knowledge base automation using AI and custom-built tools, and collaborate with IT teams to enhance self-service through intelligent automation.
Develop Model Context Protocol (MCP) servers and integrations that connect enterprise SaaS platforms (for example Workday, Coupa, DocuSign, Slack, Atlassian) and ITSM tools to AI agents and large language models.
Design and maintain API integrations between ITSM tools, enterprise applications, and third-party services.
Rapidly learn unfamiliar tools, platforms, and APIs and turn that knowledge into shipped, production-ready solutions, using AI coding assistants like Claude Code to accelerate development without sacrificing code correctness or quality.
Build and maintain automation pipelines using scripting, webhooks, and tools to connect business systems (for example Google Workspace, Atlassian, Slack), large language models, and internal APIs.
Perform full-stack development using Python and/or Node.js to support advanced automation and integration requirements.
Write and maintain code to manipulate data, handle edge cases, and extend workflow logic for automation solutions.
Apply DevOps principles (Continuous Integration / Continuous Deployment pipelines, monitoring, containerization) to ensure the resilience, scalability, and maintainability of automation systems.
Monitor automation performance, troubleshoot issues, and continuously improve system efficiency, scalability, and security.
Partner with stakeholders to lead ideation, solutioning, and scaling of AI-driven automation into production systems.
Serve as a technical subject matter expert for the integration and impact of AI capabilities within existing SaaS and ITSM applications.
Collaborate with ITSM, DevOps, and software development teammates to identify and implement opportunities for automation and application modernization, particularly leveraging AI.
Required Skills and Experience
5+ years of IT engineering, automation engineering, ITSM, or software development experience.
A generalist skill set with a proven ability to learn new technologies quickly and ship with them.
Experience working with APIs and creating automations, with a strong understanding of API integrations and automation frameworks.
Experience with ITSM tools such as ServiceNow, Jira Service Management, or similar platforms.
Proficiency in automation platforms such as Workato, n8n, or similar tools, and familiarity with low-code / no-code automation platforms and their best practices.
Strong scripting skills (Python, PowerShell, JavaScript / Node.js).
Hands-on experience with AI coding assistants such as Claude Code.
Direct experience with major SaaS applications (Slack / Google Workspace / Airtable preferred).
Strong communication and collaboration skills, with the ability to document procedures and workflows for both technical and non-technical audiences.
Nice to Have
Experience building AI agents, chatbots, or Model Context Protocol (MCP) servers.
Experience working with AI-driven automation tools.
Familiarity with large language model application patterns (prompt design, retrieval, tool / function calling).
Background in internal tools or platform engineering.
Background in cloud platforms (Azure, AWS, or Google Cloud) and DevOps principles.
