What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Virtual Antenna Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Virtual Antenna Engineer, you need a strong background in electromagnetic theory, RF engineering, and antenna design, usually supported by a degree in electrical engineering or a related field. Expertise in simulation tools such as CST Microwave Studio, HFSS, and MATLAB, as well as familiarity with industry standards, is typically required. Analytical thinking, problem-solving, and effective communication skills help you collaborate with multidisciplinary teams and address complex design challenges. These skills ensure the development of high-performance virtual antenna solutions that meet technical requirements and project goals.

How does a Virtual Antenna Engineer typically collaborate with hardware and software teams during the product development cycle?

As a Virtual Antenna Engineer, you will frequently work alongside both hardware and software teams to ensure antenna designs are seamlessly integrated into devices. Collaboration might involve regular meetings to discuss simulation results, sharing design constraints, and troubleshooting issues that arise during prototyping and testing. You’ll often translate complex electromagnetic simulation data into actionable insights for hardware engineers and provide feedback to software developers on optimizing wireless performance. Effective communication skills are essential, as your input directly impacts the device’s connectivity and overall performance.

What does a Virtual Antenna Engineer do?

A Virtual Antenna Engineer designs, models, and optimizes antenna systems using computer simulations rather than physical prototypes. They use advanced software tools to predict how antennas will perform in various devices, such as smartphones and IoT gadgets. Their work helps ensure wireless devices have reliable connectivity and meet regulatory standards, often collaborating with hardware and software teams. This role is essential for streamlining the development process and reducing the cost and time of physical testing.

What is the difference between Virtual Antenna Engineer vs RF Engineer?

AspectVirtual Antenna EngineerRF Engineer
CredentialsBachelor's in Electrical Engineering or related; certifications like RF or antenna designBachelor's or higher in Electrical Engineering; RF certifications often preferred
Work EnvironmentRemote or on-site; focus on antenna design and simulationOn-site or remote; focus on RF systems, testing, and signal analysis
Industry UsageTelecommunications, wireless networks, 5G developmentWireless communications, broadcasting, defense, and telecom

Both roles require electrical engineering knowledge and related certifications. Virtual Antenna Engineers primarily focus on antenna design and simulation, often working remotely, while RF Engineers handle radio frequency systems, testing, and signal analysis, typically in lab or field settings. Understanding these differences helps clarify career paths and employer expectations in the wireless industry.

Job description

Radar Reinvented.
Echodyne offers the world's first compact solid-state true beam-steering radar for a wide range of industries and applications. Our high-performance radars work in all weather and are designed for autonomous vehicles, uncrewed aircraft & drones, and security of borders, critical infrastructure, and smart cities. The company combines the patented technology of metamaterials with powerful software to create a radar sensor with unprecedented performance at commercial price points. Echodyne offers its radars to companies working in Automotive, Transportation, Critical Infrastructure Protection, Border Security, Smart Cities, Uncrewed Aircraft Systems (UAS), and Airspace Management including Urban Air Mobility (UTM).
Echodyne is seeking Antenna Production Engineers to join our fast-growing team and even faster-growing production facilities.
At Echodyne, we don't just believe radar makes the world safer and more secure; we know it. Echodyne employees see the proof of it every day, and in this role, your work will directly and observably support our mission of "Safety and Security in an Age of Autonomy."
RESPONSIBILITIES
The Antenna Production Engineering team will own the maintenance and evolution of all antenna and radar test & measurement instruments. Members of this team will be responsible for ensuring that antenna ATP instruments maintain operational uptime that supports production targets, for identifying and leading upgrades, and will work with the manufacturing team as SMEs supporting expansions of Echodyne's production facilities.
REQUIRED SKILLS / EXPERIENCE
  • BS Degree or higher in Engineering or Physics
  • 2 or more years of experience in antennas or antenna-measurement.
  • Understanding of the fundamentals of antennas and antenna measurement.
  • Hands-on experience measuring antennas or radiating RF devices at microwave and/or millimeter-wave frequencies.
  • Experience performing data analysis for measurement/experiments, related to antenna measurement, including pattern analysis, side-lobes, and near/far field transformations.
  • Some experience writing code for analysis, applications, or projects.
DESIRED SKILLS / EXPERIENCE
(Looking for one or more as a complement to the core skills)

  • Hands-on experience with complex mixed-signal (RF, analog, & digital) instruments or experimental apparatus.
  • Experience in any mechanical engineering CAD programs.
  • Aptitude for building things, and hands-on proactive approach to what needs to get done.
CULTURAL NORTH STAR
The antenna production engineering team will play a key role in Echodyne's continued rapid growth by owning the production instruments for our MESA antenna (core-technology) assemblies. Candidates for this position will be excited to work in an operational environment that may include periods of time-pressure to meet production targets, but where every week is a badge of honor knowing your work directly made a positive impact on the safety & security of our country members and allies around the world.
Echodyne's technology is export controlled by the U.S. Government and we must evaluate an applicant's eligibility to handle export-controlled information or obtain required Government authorizations. Therefore, we will ask you as part of the application process to identify whether you are a U.S. Citizen or green card holder, or have asylum/refugee status in the U.S.
