HOURLY RATE: $43.50
WORK SCHEDULE: Monday - Friday, 5:00 AM - 1:30 PM
POSITION SUMMARY:
This position handles the metrology requirements of the Machine shop, Shipyard, and other fabrication facilities using Faro Laser Trackers and Portable CMM's (currently about 25% of the time but may increase) duties include measuring positions and flatness of foundations on vessels and supporting the setup of line boring/ portable milling equipment. When not surveying this position spends the remainder of the supporting the shop by operating Manual and CNC Mills/ Lathes, Reverse engineering components, & general shop duties.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Set up and operate standard machine shop equipment. Mills, lathes, etc.
  • Operate manual mills and lathes.
  • Manufacture parts from both engineered drawings and sample parts.
  • Able to inspect and report dimensional features as required.
  • Reverse engineer - shafts, flanges, bushings, etc. that come off the ship and provide sketches for the team to manufacture to.
  • Support the shipyard and Fabrication facilities with Metrology support as required.
  • This role at times requires the individual to work in areas considered hazardous, both on land and aboard ships, during active production hours where welding, grinding, blasting, and other work are being performed, regardless of weather conditions.
  • This role directly supports live production and installation activities where delays, errors, or misalignment can impact multiple trades simultaneously.
  • The Machinist/ Metrologist will be responsible for gathering data using various equipment, including laser trackers and Portable CMM's.
  • Tasks range from setting modules or equipment, checking flatness and creating deviation reports.
  • This position may require facilitating and directing others to accomplish the task at hand to achieve correct position of machinery, fabricated components, etc.
  • This often results in continuous work that can extend past your scheduled shift and into overtime.
  • This role involves supporting multiple facilities in the Portland Metro Area when providing metrology support, however travel is an expected part of the role and can vary in frequency.
  • Most travel will be within a few hundred miles, but there may be occasions where nationwide travel is required.
  • Carry heavy equipment for long periods of time, including up and down flights of stairs and in and out of confined spaces / tanks.
  • Frequent work in noisy, hot, dirty, and visually obstructed environments where equipment protection, personal safety, and situational awareness are critical.

QUALIFICATIONS:
  • 3+ Years -Experience operating Faro Laser and Tracker Arms preferably on large, fabricated structures.
  • 3+ Years- experience using Metrology software- spatial analyzer preferred.
  • 3+ Years CNC & Manual Machining experience.
  • Ability to select correct cutting tools and calculate appropriate cutting speeds/ feeds.
  • Line boring/ portable milling experience strongly preferred.
  • Advanced understanding of print reading and interpreting of GD&T - ASME Y14.5
  • Ability to accurately use precision measuring tools Micrometers, Indicators, etc.
  • Ability to make real-time decisions with incomplete data and communicate risk, tolerance, and intent clearly to supervisors and crafts.
  • Ability to clearly direct multiple crafts (fitters, welders, rigging, QA) during time-critical alignment and placement operations.
  • Ability to perform and thrive under pressure in a very fast-moving Fabrication/ Construction environment.
  • Comfortable working independently with minimal instruction.
