Job Summary:
We are seeking a high-performing Senior Business Development Representative who brings a proven track record of sales success and an established network of logistics or supply chain relationships. This is a strategic hire as we are looking for someone who can hit the ground running by leveraging their existing book of business and immediately contributing to revenue growth.
The ideal candidate is a self-starter with deep industry knowledge, strong shipper relationships, and the confidence to independently manage a pipeline from prospecting through close. You will have the full support of VPL’s operations, pricing, and carrier procurement teams behind you while your sole focus will be building and growing customer relationships.
Duties/Responsibilities:
  • Leverage your existing book of business and industry network to generate immediate revenue from day one.
  • Proactively develop new business opportunities through cold calling, networking, referrals, and warm introductions from your existing relationships.
  • Manage the full sales cycle, from initial outreach and qualification through proposal, negotiation, and close.
  • Cultivate and grow a portfolio of accounts, serving as the primary point of contact and strategic advisor for your customers.
  • Maintain thorough and accurate records of all sales activity, pipeline stages, and customer interactions in CRM (HubSpot).
  • Stay current on VPL’s full suite of service offerings and proactively identify cross-sell and upsell opportunities within your book.
  • Provide clients with market intelligence, industry updates, and insights relevant to their logistics and supply chain needs.
  • Represent the VPL brand at industry events, trade shows, and conferences to expand your network and generate leads.
  • Partner with internal operations and pricing teams to develop competitive solutions that win and retain business.
  • Consistently meet or exceed assigned revenue, GP, and new account goals.
Key Performance Indicators (KPIs):
  • Volume and quality of weekly outbound calls and prospecting activity.
  • New buying accounts opened per month/quarter.
  • % of revenue and GP goals achieved.
  • Pipeline coverage ratio and CRM activity completeness.
  • Book of business retention and growth year-over-year.

Required Education / Experience:
  • 5+ years of sales experience in freight brokerage, 3PL, transportation, or supply chain – with a demonstrated track record of hitting or exceeding quote.
  • An established network of shipper, broker, or freight forwarding contacts you can leverage immediately.
  • Proven ability to independently manage a full sales pipeline with minimal hand-holding.
  • Experience selling across multiple modes: FTL, Expedite, Drayage/MMDL, Flatbed or Power Only preferred.
  • Proficient with CRM platforms; disciplined about pipeline hygiene and activity tracking.
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite – Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, Teams, etc.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration, Supply Chain, Communication, or related field, preferred.

Physical Requirements:
  • Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer.

Required Travel:
On demand travel based on job activity including prospect and client visits, trade shows, and an ability to commute to both the Waukegan and Chicago office locations as requested.
