Our Business Insurance department is seeking a Regional Vice President for Commercial Lines to join our growing team in our Syracuse, NY branch.

Position summary:

Reporting to the Zone or Regional Executive, The Regional Vice President is responsible for driving profitable growth in the assigned territory. The Regional Vice President leads the execution of the CORE (middle market and small commercial) businesses operating plans, new business development, retention, and distribution management. The RVP leads and coordinates Enterprise-Wide strategies across assigned territory; is accountable for top-line growth and collaborates with all Specialty Business to achieve those results. The RVP reviews and resolves complex issues, develops local market plans, oversees the team’s achievement of portfolio actions and interfaces with team members to provide a high level of customer service for agency partners, claims, risk control, service center, and policy processing. Leads a middle market team and coaches assigned teams from respective business units. Leads and executes Hanover Strategy in assigned territory.

This is a Full-time, Exempt role. This is a Hybrid position.


Responsibilities/Essential Functions:

  • Responsible for local market plan and operating results of a region
  • Sculpts an optimal local enterprise portfolio that maximizes growth and profit thoughtfully balancing mix by business unit, geography, line of business, industry, rate/terms, and account profile.
  • The RVP role is key to the growth and development of our underwriting community. They promote/deliver an environment of inclusion, diversity, and equity.
  • Leads a middle market team with direct reporting relationship to local AVP and/or Middle Market Director.
  • Collaborates and provides coaching and guidance to all enterprise partners in territory.
  • Is accountable for critical middle market profit and margin improvement initiatives.
  • Leads business units in prospecting and developing agency consolidation opportunities, spearheads Agency Insights process in local marketplace and negotiates deals to conclusion.
  • Drive outsized SMCL growth via broad-based agency initiatives, including consolidations, LAP, and/or new agency appointments.
  • Plans and implements marketing and sales strategies. Partners with local personal lines counterparts to assure enterprise connectivity and leverage.
  • Accountable for CAT Management and portfolio balance
  • Collaborating with Small Commercial leadership, drives distribution expansion aligned with territory opportunity.
  • Champions Hanover CARE values and execution and assessment of teams’ L5 development
  • Promote and drive Specialty new business growth in close coordination with Specialty leaders and RDD’s. Ensure focus is on the right businesses in dedicated geographies to maximize growth, portfolio mix, profit to create regional specialty strategy.
  • Facilitate a Total Hanover approach when and where appropriate to deliver enterprise-wide solutions to agents and accounts.
  • Achieve next level franchise breadth and relevancy depth with our key partnerships.
  • Strategically invest in broker and alternative distribution in our local markets
  • Improve market access (expand distribution) in territories for our higher-margin products – notably, in alignment with SMCL and PEL
  • Prioritizes coaching plans and performance assessments (working directly with CUO’s) and effective IDPs for AVPs, Directors and MM Underwriters, building out robust regional and key performer perpetuation plans and leading talent pipeline efforts for the franchise.
  • Leads external talent pipelining for assigned geography across business functions.
  • Leads implementation and development of branch goals and objectives in assigned marketplace.
  • Manages regional expenses.
  • Participates in regulatory and legislative affairs for assigned states, including serving on boards and bureaus.
  • Acts as consultant and decision-maker on complex underwriting and distribution issues.
  • Participates and collaborates in corporate and regional strategic planning.
  • Ability to influence decisions and results in a highly matrixed environment.

Position Requirements:

  • Ten years or more of general property and casualty experience required.
  • 7-10 years of leadership experience preferred.
  • CPCU or CIC designations preferred.
  • Sound technical knowledge of commercial and personal lines insurance business; including different lines of coverage, risk selection, methods, and pricing.
  • Demonstrated evidence of success in managing operations and staff in underwriting and marketing functions within a competitive environment
  • Excellent communication, negotiation, and people skills required.
