What is a VEVRAA Federal Contractor?

A VEVRAA Federal Contractor is an employer who holds a federal contract or subcontract worth $150,000 or more and is therefore subject to the Vietnam Era Veterans' Readjustment Assistance Act (VEVRAA) regulations. These regulations require contractors to take affirmative action to employ and advance qualified protected veterans. VEVRAA Federal Contractors must also list most job openings with the appropriate state employment service and maintain records of their efforts. Compliance is monitored by the Office of Federal Contract Compliance Programs (OFCCP).

How does working as a VEVRAA Federal Contractor influence the recruitment and hiring process?

As a VEVRAA Federal Contractor, you will participate in a highly structured recruitment process that emphasizes affirmative action and equal employment opportunity for veterans. This means you'll work closely with HR and compliance teams to ensure job postings, outreach, and hiring practices align with federal regulations. The role often involves collaborating with various departments to track applicant data and report on hiring outcomes. This environment supports learning about federal compliance and can offer unique growth opportunities in HR, compliance, or government contracting fields.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a VEVRAA Federal Contractor, and why are they important?

To thrive as a VEVRAA Federal Contractor, you need a solid understanding of federal contracting regulations, affirmative action requirements, and compliance standards, typically supported by experience in government contracting or human resources. Familiarity with compliance management systems, OFCCP audit preparation tools, and relevant certifications like Certified Affirmative Action Professional (CAAP) is valuable. Strong organizational skills, attention to detail, and the ability to communicate regulatory requirements clearly are important soft skills in this role. These skills ensure ongoing regulatory compliance, successful audit outcomes, and the ability to maintain federal contracts.
