Job Summary

Join our dynamic healthcare team as a Veterinary Pharmacy Technician, where you will play a vital role in supporting the safe and effective dispensing of medications for animal patients. This energetic position involves preparing, verifying, and managing veterinary pharmaceuticals while ensuring compliance with all regulatory standards. You will also be responsible for performing diagnostics testing on blood, urine and fecal samples. You will maintain inventory of medications, hospital supplies and prescription diets. You will collaborate closely with veterinarians, pet owners, and pharmacy staff to deliver exceptional patient care and medication management. Your expertise will help improve animal health outcomes through precise medication preparation, data entry, and patient service.

Responsibilities

  • Assist veterinarians in dispensing medications, including compounding medications and preparing sterile IV admixtures using aseptic techniques.
  • Manage inventory of medications, hospital and surgical items and prescription food.
  • Must be able to lift 50lbs for restocking of prescription food shelves.
  • Must be able to handle and run in clinic laboratory samples using urine, fecal and blood samples. 
  • Must be able to use microscope and identify organisms for appropriate diagnostics.
  • Must be able to alternate between standing and sitting through out scheduled shift times of 8+ hours. 
  • Manage pharmacy inventory, ensuring proper storage, stock levels, and expiration date monitoring in accordance with pharmaceutical regulatory compliance.
  • Perform pharmaceutical calculations accurately for medication dosages tailored to animal patients of various sizes and species.
  • Enter patient data into pharmacy software systems efficiently while maintaining strict confidentiality of all patient information.
  • Support IV infusion procedures and sterile compounding processes following hospital pharmacy standards and aseptic techniques.
  • Ensure adherence to state and federal pharmacy laws related to drug regulation, controlled substances, and medical terminology.
  • Maintain hospital inventory and prescription diet inventory.
  • Maintain clinic laboratory equipment.
  • Communicate with referral labs and ensure shipping of samples.
  • Maintain detailed documentation of medication intake, dispensation records, and inventory logs to support compliance audits.
  • Collaborate with veterinary staff to ensure timely medication delivery for acute care cases or ongoing treatments in hospital or community settings.

Experience

  • Prior experience working as a pharmacy technician in a veterinary or hospital pharmacy environment is highly preferred.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of pharmaceutical calculations, drug regulation, and medical terminology relevant to veterinary medicine.
  • Experience with pharmacy software systems used for data entry, inventory management, and patient record keeping.
  • Cleaning and maintenance of in clinic laboratory equipment.
  • Experience with viewing samples under microscope and reporting findings to Veterinarian.
  • Hands-on experience collecting urine, blood and fecal samples.
  • Hands-on experience with IV compounding, sterile technique procedures, and aseptic environment maintenance.
  • Familiarity with LTC (Long-Term Care) pharmacy practices, critical care scenarios, or hospital pharmacy operations is advantageous.
  • Certification in Basic Life Support (BLS) or equivalent is desirable to support emergency response readiness.
  • Proven ability to adhere to strict confidentiality standards while managing sensitive patient information in compliance with state healthcare regulations.
