Job description

Organization Overview

The Comparative Bioscience Center provides a comprehensive program of animal care in support of the University's in vivo research. The goal of our staff is to provide investigators with the highest level of research support at the lowest cost while ensuring the welfare of the animals used in the research. The center is fully accredited by the Association for Assessment and Accreditation of Laboratory Animal Care International (AAALAC).

Overview

The Veterinary Services Assistant will assist veterinarians and veterinary technicians with exams, procedures and sample collection; preparing, providing and documenting enrichment for multiple species. The role requires at least one weekend day each week and some holidays.

Responsibilities

Major responsibilities include:

  • Engage in regular communication with veterinary technicians, veterinarians, scientists and animal husbandry staff

  • Assist veterinarians and veterinary technicians with exams, procedures and sample collection

  • Prepare, provide and document enrichment for multiple species

  • Perform specialized handling and restraint of all species

  • Performing in-house diagnostic tests

  • Maintain veterinary equipment

  • Prepare samples for outside reference labs

  • Prepare and dispense medications

  • Adminster treatments as pertained to a NYS non-licensed technician

  • Perform regular health screenings of sentinel and quarantine species

  • Conduct inventory and invoicing of supplies, restocking and notifying/ordering stock shortages

  • Maintain surgical instruments, sterile supplies and special equipment

  • Procedure set up and clean up; maintaining rooms

  • Assist with administrative/clerical support

  • Performing other duties as assigned

May be required to work weekends and some holidays. Various minor responsibilities may also be assigned and can vary based upon personal interests, vivarium room round assignments, or departmental needs.

Qualifications

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

High School Diploma required. The candidate should be a positive and flexible individual who can adapt to a dynamic work environment and work successfully as part of a team while working with a broad variety of species. Must be able to follow established standard operating protocols, communicate concisely and effectively, and work independently and proactively. Must have excellent organizational skills and have an acute attention to details. Must be able to tolerate a significant amount of standing, bending, and walking. Must not be allergic to animals, latex, waste products, or bedding. Must be able to lift 50 pounds. Will be required to work at least one weekend day each week and some holidays.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

One year previous veterinary or research animal experience preferred. Basic computer skills, knowledge of Excel, Outlook, and Word.
