They use their shared experiences to connect with and guide veterans through recovery, offering emotional support, mentorship, and resources. Typically working in VA facilities, nonprofit organizations, or community programs, they help build trust and reduce stigma around seeking help. Their role is crucial in providing relatable, firsthand support that complements clinical treatment.

Veteran Peer Specialists need lived experience as a veteran, knowledge of mental health recovery principles, and completion of specialized peer support training or certification programs. Familiarity with electronic record-keeping systems, documentation protocols, and specific peer support certification—such as those offered by the Department of Veterans Affairs or state programs—is typically required. These qualities enable Veteran Peer Specialists to effectively support fellow veterans through shared experience, helping them navigate challenges and access resources for recovery.
