As a private company, its financial details are not publicly disclosed, so it is unclear whether Velo3D is currently profitable or generating consistent revenue. Investors and industry analysts monitor its growth and funding rounds for financial insights.

What does Velo3D Inc. do?

Velo3D Inc. is a company that develops and manufactures advanced metal 3D printers and additive manufacturing solutions. It focuses on providing high-quality, complex metal parts for industries such as aerospace, automotive, and industrial manufacturing, often requiring specialized skills in 3D printing technology and engineering. Employees may work with specialized software, such as Velo3D's Flow and BuildIQ, and need technical knowledge of metal additive manufacturing processes.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Velo3D Additive Manufacturing Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Velo3D Additive Manufacturing Engineer, you need a solid background in mechanical engineering, materials science, or a related field, often with a bachelor’s or higher degree. Familiarity with Velo3D Sapphire 3D printers, additive manufacturing software (such as Flow or other CAD/CAM tools), and relevant industry certifications are highly valued. Strong problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and effective communication enable you to optimize processes and collaborate with cross-functional teams. These competencies are crucial for ensuring precision manufacturing, driving innovation, and maintaining quality standards in advanced 3D printing environments.

What is a Velo3D engineer?

A Velo3D engineer is a professional who specializes in working with Velo3D's advanced metal 3D printing technology. They are skilled in operating, maintaining, and optimizing Velo3D's additive manufacturing systems to produce high-quality, complex metal parts. Their responsibilities may include machine setup, process development, troubleshooting, and collaborating with design teams to ensure parts meet precise specifications. Velo3D engineers are often found in industries like aerospace, energy, and automotive, where innovative manufacturing techniques are crucial for performance and efficiency.

Can you make a career out of 3D printing?

A career in 3D printing is possible, especially in roles such as additive manufacturing technician, engineer, or designer. It requires skills in CAD software, knowledge of 3D printing technologies, and often certifications or training in materials and processes. The industry offers opportunities in manufacturing, aerospace, healthcare, and prototyping environments.

What are some unique challenges faced by engineers working at Velo3D in the metal additive manufacturing industry?

Engineers at Velo3D often encounter challenges related to developing and optimizing advanced metal 3D printing processes, which require a deep understanding of material science, machine calibration, and quality assurance. Collaborating closely with cross-functional teams—such as software developers, applications engineers, and production staff—is essential to troubleshoot build issues and implement design for additive manufacturing (DfAM) principles. Additionally, staying up to date with evolving industry standards and customer requirements adds complexity, but also presents opportunities for professional growth and innovation.

What is the difference between Velo3D vs CNC Machinist?

AspectVelo3DCNC Machinist
Required CredentialsEngineering degree or specialized training in additive manufacturingTechnical diploma or apprenticeship in machining
Work EnvironmentDesign labs, additive manufacturing facilitiesMachine shops, manufacturing plants
Industry UsageAdvanced aerospace, space, and high-tech sectorsAutomotive, aerospace, general manufacturing

Velo3D professionals focus on additive manufacturing and design for 3D printing, often requiring engineering backgrounds. CNC Machinists operate traditional subtractive machining equipment in manufacturing settings. While both roles are involved in manufacturing, Velo3D specialists work with cutting-edge 3D printing technology, whereas CNC Machinists handle precision machining of parts. Understanding these differences helps clarify career paths and employer expectations in high-tech manufacturing industries.
