JOB SUMMARY

To provide security for Municipal Court and perform other duties as assigned by the Chief Court Marshal.

The City of Lakewood is currently recruiting variable employees for this position. A variable employee is an at-will employee who works in a seasonal or temporary capacity. Their work schedule is based on business need. This position would be a part-time non benefitted position.

MAJOR TASKS, DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES (This job description does not intend to list every function of the position.)

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

Maintain order and provide security for all sessions in the courtroom and hallways of Municipal Court.

Operate Court security equipment. Screens individuals who enter Court area and the Public Safety Center.

Assists Court Marshals and Marshal's office staff as needed.

Performs work that requires regular and reliable attendance and the ability to follow supervisor's instructions.

Performs other duties as assigned by the Chief Court Marshal.

Must be able to interact with others in a positive manner.

Requires regular and prompt attendance.

ORGANIZATIONAL RELATIONSHIPS

Supervision Received

Receives general supervision from the Chief Court Marshal.

ESSENTIAL QUALIFICATIONS (Knowledge, Skills and Abilities)

Education

High school diploma or equivalent.

Experience

At least two years of experience in law enforcement or specific job related experience.

Licensure/Certification/Registration

Present Colorado P.O.S.T. certification.

Valid driver's license and good driving record.

Other Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Ability to qualify with duty weapon (9 mm, .40, or .45).

Ability to read and understand departmental policies, rules, instructions, laws and ordinances.

Ability to carefully observe situations in the courtroom, hallways, magnetometer and surrounding environment.

Ability to understand and follow written and oral direction.

Knowledge of the use and care of firearms and the ability to understand and use appropriate levels of force, based on specific circumstances.

Integrity and the ability to handle confidential information.

Ability to qualify with duty weapon and maintain firearms qualification.

Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships as necessitated by work assignments.

Ability to remain alert at all times.

Must be able to be assertive and exert control over belligerent, distressed or abusive persons, when necessary.

Ability to detain, arrest and transport subjects when necessary

Knowledge of Federal, State, and County codes and ordinances relating to law enforcement.

May be required to pass a polygraph examination, oral board interview, psychological examination, pre-placement physical, and physical abilities test.

Ability to deal tactfully and courteously with others from diverse economic, cultural, and ethnic backgrounds.

Sound judgment and ability to recognize situations of potential danger.

Must attend training classes as determined by the Chief Court Marshal.

Ability to handle abuse, both verbal and physical, when dealing with hostile suspects and others encountered in antagonistic environments.

Computer skills and knowledge of software programs.

Must demonstrate regular and reliable attendance.

Awareness of safety and ability to maintain a safe position when dealing with prisoners.

Background check required.

Preferred Qualifications

Evidence of continuing education or training in law enforcement field.

Bi-lingual (Spanish-speaking) is a desirable qualification.

Three years law enforcement experience.

Lifting and Carrying

Ability to lift/move objects weighing up to 50 pounds from one location to another, e.g., files, paper, equipment. Performs work that requires keyboarding skills, sitting for extended periods of time, bending, stooping, reaching, standing at magnetometer and walking to various locations throughout the Public Safety Building and outlying areas.

Pushing and Pulling

Ability to push and pull when apprehending suspects and applying baton or handcuff maneuvers when situation warrants.

Body Positions

Ability to effectively apply physical control methods, i.e., ACT (arrest control tactics), baton, and handcuffing techniques. Ability to control prisoners when necessary.

Balance and coordination, especially while using force techniques that exceed that seen in normal standing and walking.

Muscular endurance and strength to physically separate individuals who are fighting or preparing to fight.

Cardiovascular endurance (stamina, aerobic fitness) in order to pursue suspects, if needed, or deal with belligerent, antagonistic, aggressive individuals in the courtroom and surrounding areas.

Hearing

Employee must be able to hear and remain alert to the potential for hazardous or dangerous situations, as well as hear audible signals from radio and office equipment.

Vision

Employee uses vision to observe courtrooms and hallways in the Municipal Court, as well as when driving to pick up or deliver prisoners.

Must be able to remember and understand policies, rules, instructions, laws and ordinances pertinent to the job.

Language Ability

Must be able to read, write and speak in order to communicate with Judges, co-workers, prisoners and the general public. Uses voice to control volatile and potentially dangerous situations in the courtroom and surrounding environment.

Must be able to assess hazardous or harmful situations and adopt quick, effective and reasonable courses of action, giving due regard to surrounding hazards and circumstances of each situation.

Hazardous conditions due to exposure or contact with persons infected with highly contagious diseases.
