What are some common challenges faced by utility executives when implementing new technologies within their organizations?

Utility Executives often encounter challenges such as integrating new technologies with existing legacy systems, managing regulatory compliance, and aligning diverse stakeholder interests. Ensuring reliable service delivery while adopting innovations like smart grids or renewable energy solutions requires careful planning and cross-departmental collaboration. Additionally, Utility Executives must lead change management efforts to gain buy-in from staff and address potential cybersecurity risks associated with newer technologies.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a utility executive, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Utility Executive, you need deep expertise in utility operations, regulatory compliance, and strategic management, often supported by a relevant degree and executive experience in the energy, water, or telecommunications sectors. Familiarity with industry-specific software (such as SCADA systems), regulatory reporting tools, and advanced energy management platforms is typically required. Strong leadership, negotiation, and stakeholder communication skills set top performers apart in this role. These abilities are crucial for guiding organizational success, ensuring regulatory adherence, and driving innovation in a rapidly evolving utility landscape.

Job description

Itron is innovating new ways for utilities and cities to manage energy and water. We create a more resourceful world to protect essential resources for today and tomorrow. Join us.

At Itron, we're building the digital foundation for the next generation of utility infrastructure. Our Resiliency Solutions business helps the world's largest energy providers modernize how they plan, build, inspect, and operate the networks that power communities every day. As utilities invest hundreds of billions of dollars in grid modernization, storm hardening, renewable integration, and critical infrastructure expansion, we're creating the platform that connects the field, the office, and the enterprise in real time.
Joining our team means becoming part of Locusview, Itron's fast-growing Resiliency Solutions business unit, a unique environment that combines the speed, innovation, and entrepreneurial spirit of a technology startup with the scale, resources, and global reach of an industry leader. This is more than a product opportunity; it's a chance to help shape a rapidly expanding platform at the center of one of the world's largest infrastructure transformations. As we continue to expand into new markets, workflows, technologies, and use cases, the opportunities to grow, innovate, and make a lasting impact are virtually limitless. For ambitious builders, problem-solvers, and innovators, there has never been a more exciting time to be part of the journey.
Account Executives are responsible for driving revenue growth and market expansion within the utility industry by developing strategic customer relationships, identifying and advancing new business opportunities, and expanding existing accounts. In this customer-centric role, you will partner with utility leaders to understand business priorities, position innovative technology solutions, and deliver measurable customer outcomes. You will own the full sales lifecycle, manage a portfolio of Electric and Gas utility accounts, and collaborate across teams to help customers modernize infrastructure, improve operational efficiency, and accelerate digital transformation initiatives.
Duties & Responsibilities
  • Develop and execute strategic territory and account plans to drive bookings, revenue growth, and customer success across assigned utility accounts.
  • Identify, qualify, and close new business opportunities while expanding existing customer relationships through upsell, cross-sell, and account growth initiatives.
  • Build authentic and trusted relationships with executive, operational, and IT stakeholders, serving as a strategic advisor to utility customers.
  • Lead complex sales engagements from discovery through proposal development, negotiation, and contract execution while maintaining a disciplined and accurate sales process.
  • Maintain forecast accuracy, pipeline health, and CRM data integrity to support accountable business planning and execution.
  • Collaborate with Solution Consultants, Customer Success, Product, and Marketing teams to deliver compelling demonstrations, business cases, and customer presentations.
  • Leverage industry expertise, market insights, and internal subject matter experts to position solutions that address utility challenges and create measurable business value.
  • Represent Itron at industry events, conferences, and customer engagements to strengthen market presence and generate new business opportunities.
Required Skills & Experience
  • 5+ years of enterprise software, SaaS, or technology solution sales experience with a proven track record of achieving or exceeding revenue targets.
  • Experience selling software solutions to Electric and/or Gas Utilities; established utility industry relationships strongly preferred.
  • Demonstrated success managing complex, multi-stakeholder sales cycles from prospecting through contract execution.
  • Knowledge of utility operations, including construction, asset management, work management, GIS, or related business processes.
  • Strong consultative selling skills with the ability to align technology solutions to customer business challenges and desired outcomes.
  • Experience developing and executing strategic territory and account plans while maintaining forecasting accuracy and CRM discipline.
  • Ability to work collaboratively across cross-functional teams in a fast-paced, agile, and growth-oriented environment.
  • Bachelor's degree in a related field or equivalent combination of education and experience.
Preferred Skills & Experience
  • Experience selling solutions within Gas Utilities and other utility market segments.
  • Experience with utility work management, GIS, asset management, field operations, or infrastructure management solutions.
  • Familiarity with Esri technologies and partner ecosystem sales motions.
  • Experience supporting customers undergoing digital transformation, operational modernization, or infrastructure investment initiatives.
Travel: Up to 50%+ travel.
