Position Summary

The Sr. Director, Non-Utility and Accounting Strategy is responsible for leading the Company's non-utility accounting function and providing strategic direction over technical accounting, benefits accounting and accounting for new business growth.

This role drives consistency in accounting policy application, and serves as a key advisor to senior leadership on complex accounting matters, new transactions, and strategic initiatives.


Tasks and Responsibilities

Leadership and Organizational Oversight

  • Lead and develop the Technical & Benefits Accounting and Non-Utility Accounting teams, ensuring clear priorities, strong performance management, and ongoing capability development.
  • Establish clear accountability across teams for quality and accuracy, compliance, analysis and strategic thinking, and process execution.
  • Foster a high-performing, collaborative environment and build strong cross-functional relationships across Finance and the broader business.

Technical Accounting and Policy Leadership

  • Oversee accounting research and evaluation of complex transactions, contracts, and new business activities, ensuring appropriate accounting treatment and documentation.
  • Serve as the Company's senior accounting subject matter expert across key areas including consolidation, leasing, revenue recognition, investments, derivatives, impairments, and the accounting for rate-regulated entities.
  • Monitor and assess new accounting standards for utilities specific issues, coordinate with implementation efforts, and ensure alignment across the organization.
  • Oversee development and maintenance of business unit specific accounting policies and procedures, ensuring consistency with corporate standards and regulatory requirements.

Benefits Accounting Oversight

  • Provide strategic oversight of accounting and reporting for all employee and retiree benefit plans, including pensions, health and welfare plans, and defined contribution plans.
  • Ensure appropriate accounting treatment, audit readiness, and financial reporting compliance for all benefit-related activities.
  • Advise leadership on financial and accounting implications of benefit plan strategies and cost assumptions.

Non-Utility Accounting and Reporting

  • Oversee the monthly close process and production of financial statements for non-utility operations, ensuring accuracy, timeliness, and compliance with GAAP and regulatory requirements as required.
  • Ensure strong coordination with internal and external auditors and oversee audit deliverables and timelines.
  • Partner with senior leadership to support financial statement reviews, filings, and reporting requirements.
  • Provide strategic support and financial oversight for non-utility business leaders.

Strategy, Change, and Continuous Improvement

  • Lead accounting strategy across non-utility and technical areas, ensuring alignment with business priorities and regulatory expectations.
  • Oversee finance change control processes to identify and assess impacts of business changes on financial reporting.
  • Drive continuous improvement in non-utility accounting processes, systems, and controls, including identifying opportunities to enhance efficiency and effectiveness.
  • Lead cross-functional initiatives to improve finance processes and support business growth and transformation.


Qualifications, Skills and Abilities

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting or related field required; Master's degree preferred.
  • 10+ years of progressive accounting experience, including significant experience in technical accounting and financial reporting.
  • CPA strongly preferred.
  • Deep knowledge of GAAP and experience applying accounting guidance to complex transactions.
  • Strong leadership experience with proven ability to manage and develop high-performing teams.
  • Experience working with auditors, regulatory requirements, and internal controls (SOX compliance).
  • Excellent communication, analytical, and problem-solving skills, with the ability to influence senior leadership.
  • Experience in the utility or regulated energy industry preferred.

We offer a competitive salary range of $214,200 to $326,100 per year, commensurate with experience, education, and skills. In addition, we provide a comprehensive benefits package including health insurance, retirement plans, and paid time off.
