User Research Assistant information

Is UX research still in demand?

UX research assistants are in demand as companies prioritize user-centered design to improve products and services. The role often requires skills in user interviews, data analysis, and familiarity with tools like usability testing software, with employment growth expected to continue as digital experiences expand.

How to become a UX research assistant?

To become a UX research assistant, candidates typically need a bachelor's degree in psychology, human-computer interaction, or a related field. Gaining skills in research methods, data analysis, and tools like surveys and interview platforms is important, along with experience in user testing or usability studies. Internships or entry-level roles in research or design can also help build relevant experience.

What is the difference between User Research Assistant vs User Experience Designer?

AspectUser Research AssistantUser Experience Designer
Primary FocusAssists in gathering and analyzing user dataDesigns and improves overall user experience
Required SkillsResearch methods, data analysis, communicationDesign tools, user-centered design, prototyping
Work EnvironmentResearch teams, usability labs, surveysDesign studios, cross-functional teams
Common CertificationsResearch certifications, UX certifications

While a User Research Assistant focuses on collecting and analyzing user data to inform design decisions, a User Experience Designer takes that data to create and optimize the overall user interface and experience. Both roles often collaborate but serve different functions within the product development process.

Is AI replacing UX research?

User Research Assistants and other UX professionals use AI tools to analyze data, identify patterns, and automate repetitive tasks, which can enhance research efficiency. However, AI does not replace the need for human judgment, empathy, and contextual understanding that are essential in designing user-centered experiences. Human oversight remains critical in interpreting insights and making strategic decisions in UX research.

How much does an UX researcher get paid?

UX researchers typically earn between $70,000 and $120,000 annually, depending on experience, location, and industry. Entry-level roles may start around $60,000, while senior positions can exceed $130,000, especially in tech companies. Skills in user research methods, data analysis, and familiarity with tools like UserTesting or Optimal Workshop can influence salary levels.

Job Description
As a Product Designer II, you'll build on foundational design skills to take ownership of small to mid-sized features across our automotive platform. You'll work closely with cross-functional teams to translate user needs into thoughtful, usable interfaces, while continuing to grow your expertise in design systems, interaction design, and user research.
You'll contribute to design critiques, collaborate on user testing, and help refine our design processes. This role is ideal for designers ready to deepen their craft and take on more responsibility in shaping product experiences.
Position Responsibilities:
  • Translate business requirements and user insights into intuitive, user-centered design solutions across desktop and mobile platforms.
  • Assist in user research activities, including persona development, heuristic evaluations, usability reviews, and competitive analysis, to inform design decisions.
  • Create and iterate on UX deliverables such as user flows, journey maps, wireframes, mockups, prototypes (low/high fidelity), and information architecture.
  • Extend and apply the design system using reusable components, icon libraries, templates, and brand standards to ensure consistency and efficiency.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams-including product managers, developers, content strategists, and UX leads-to align on goals, constraints, and implementation strategies.
  • Communicate design rationale clearly in design reviews and stakeholder presentations, advocating for user needs and business impact.
  • Participate in agile ceremonies and workflows, providing design assets, specifications, and feedback throughout the development lifecycle.
  • Support usability testing and review behavioral analytics to validate and optimize design performance.
  • Maintain detailed design specifications and partner with developers to ensure accurate implementation, including involvement in user acceptance testing.
  • Stay current with UX trends, tools, and technologies, and contribute to evolving team processes and design practices.
  • Manage time effectively by estimating effort, planning schedules, and prioritizing tasks within sprint cycles.
  • Use general-purpose LLM tools to analyze and synthesize user behavior, identify patterns, and prioritize opportunities.
  • Use AI to accelerate discovery, experimentation, development, and recommend improvements.

Required Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree in HCI, Graphic Design, Industrial Design, or related field and 2 years' experience in a related field. The right candidate could also have a different combination, such as a master's degree and up to 2 years' experience; or 6 years' experience in a related field
  • 2+ years of relevant experience designing responsive web and mobile applications, with a portfolio demonstrating thoughtful UX solutions.
  • Advanced proficiency in Figma and familiarity with prototyping tools and AI-assisted design workflows.
  • Strong understanding of user-centered design principles and accessibility standards.
  • Experience conducting user research and translating insights into actionable design decisions.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively in Agile environments.
  • Excellent communication skills, with the ability to present design rationale to cross-functional teams
  • Strong attention to detail and ability to manage multiple priorities effectively.
  • Familiarity with design systems and component-based design approaches.
  • Familiarity with text-to-prototype tools
  • Ability to partner with product teams and leverage tools for rapid prototyping for the purposes of research, discovery, and experimentation
  • Experience creating AI products or strong knowledge of AI and agentic design practices, such as model limitations, guardrails, evals, and feedback loops

Additional Information Regarding the Position:
  • Reports to UX Manager or Product Design Lead
  • May require occasional travel
