What is a user experience research internship?

A User Experience (UX) Research Internship is a temporary position where students or recent graduates work with UX research teams to learn and contribute to the process of understanding user behaviors, needs, and motivations. Interns assist with tasks such as conducting user interviews, usability testing, surveys, and analyzing data to inform product design decisions. This role provides hands-on experience in applying research methods to real-world projects, collaborating with designers and product managers, and gaining insights into how user feedback shapes digital products. It's a valuable opportunity for those interested in a career in UX research or design.

What types of projects and responsibilities can I expect during a user experience research internship?

As a User Experience Research Intern, you can expect to work on a variety of projects, such as conducting user interviews, usability studies, and surveys to gather insights about user behaviors and needs. You’ll often collaborate with designers, product managers, and engineers to help translate research findings into actionable recommendations. Interns are typically involved in synthesizing research data, preparing reports, and sometimes presenting findings to the team. This hands-on experience helps build foundational skills and provides exposure to the full UX research process in a collaborative environment.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a user experience research intern, and why are they important?

To thrive as a User Experience Research Intern, you need a solid understanding of research methodologies, user-centered design principles, and often a background in psychology, human-computer interaction, or a related field. Familiarity with tools like usability testing platforms, survey software, and data analysis programs such as SPSS or Excel is typically expected. Strong communication, curiosity, and collaboration skills help interns effectively gather insights and work across teams. These abilities are crucial for generating actionable research findings that drive product improvements and enhance user experiences.

Must-Haves: • 2+ years of experience in UI/UX design, product design, or interaction design • 2+ years of experience with visual design skills including typography, layout, and hierarchy • 2+ years of strong proficiency with Figma (components, auto-layout, prototyping, design systems) • Ability to translate complex workflows into clear intuitive user interfaces • Ability to design for ambiguous emerging product spaces • Ability to collaborate cross-functionally with product, engineering, and development teams • Ability to work independently in a fast-paced environment and adhere to quick turnaround times. • Knowledge of AI-driven product experiences (e.g., chat interfaces, agent workflows, data visualization for models, prompt interaction patterns) • Knowledge of UX fundamentals: information architecture, interaction patterns, accessibility, and responsive design • Ability to obtain and maintain a Public Trust security clearance • Bachelor’s degree Nice-to-Haves: • Experience designing interfaces for AI/ML tools, LLM-powered products, or workflow automation • Experience conducting user research, usability testing, and synthesizing insights into design decisions • Experience with service design or journey mapping, including synthesizing customer insights into actionable design requirements and deliverables (personas, workflows, concepts) • Knowledge of front-end technologies (HTML/CSS/JS, React, or component libraries) System One, and its subsidiaries including Joulé and Mountain Ltd., are leaders in delivering outsourced services and workforce solutions across North America.
