Job Description

The Visual Designer position plays an integral role in providing visual communication platforms for the Visual Merchandising Department within Universal Studios Hollywood. Their goal is to ensure stakeholders understand project direction through comprehensively illustrating project concepts. This role reports to the Visual Manager and produces work as required. This position works interdepartmentally based on projects.

Salary range: $72,000 - $85,000

Qualifications

Essential Functions

  • Provides comprehensive visual platforms for design review & development discussions.
  • Communicates concepts with stakeholders and team members to ensure all concepts are approved prior to production.
  • Creates visual studies/mockups for internal and external stakeholders. Including but not limited to: 2D/3D concept rendering, façade design, technical package creation, in-store visual elements, window design, fixture design, store floorplans, in-store signage design, graphic design, photographs, asset management
  • Provides high-quality overview photographs of new store builds and/or major floor sets.
  • Works with the Visual Merchandising Department to create training guidelines, merchandising guidelines, and blank store templates for visual communication to the field.
  • Maintains an organized archive of Visual Merchandising assets (e.g., store photos, directives, projects, and graphic files). 
  • Conducts pre-production reviews at vendor facilities, as needed.
  • Attends trade shows, conventions, and benchmarking opportunities to maintain current industry knowledge; Travels as needed.
  • Identifies opportunities for new materials, and technology with a consideration of costs, sustainability, and durability.
  • Works on multiple projects simultaneously; Prioritizes based on the needs of the business, manages time appropriately, and coordinates with the team to deliver projects on time, on budget, and executes without errors or omissions 
  • Communicates effectively with internal and external vendors to ensure accurate and safe installation of competing Visual Merchandising projects.
  • Provides support for tasks and projects as assigned by Department leadership

Basic Requirements:

  • Minimum 3 years’ experience in visual design and/or equivalent experience.
  • Solid computer drawing/drafting skills in Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign, SketchUp, and AutoCAD.
  • Must provide a portfolio.
  • Must be willing to work weekends, holidays, and overnights as required.

Desired Characteristics:

  • 2-year or 4-year college degree in Visual Communications, Graphic Communications, or equivalent Arts Program.
  • Solid background in design projects from concept to completion.
  • Experience with in-field art direction, fabrication, and installations.
  • Understanding of many different materials, paint callouts, and finishing details.
  • Solid understanding of visual communication theory and production in a theme park and/or retail environment.
  • Demonstrated ability to work on multiple projects concurrently, with confidence to multitask and delegate as required.
  • Creative self-motivator with the ability to work independently or as a team and drive results through strong leadership and skills.
  • Ability to identify and communicate creative solutions to challenges, and to maintain a consistent focus on priorities with persistent follow-through.
  • Ability to deal well with ambiguity and constant change, working in fast-paced environments with accelerated schedules. 
  • Confidence to communicate across all lines of business, with all levels of management.
  • A strong passion to drive high-quality results, both with end products as well as procedures.
  • Strong organizational, written, and verbal communication skills through email and in-person.

Additional Requirements:

  • Required On-Site: This position is required to be performed full-time from an NBCUniversal-designated worksite.
  • Travel may be required
  • Perform other related duties as assigned to support the needs of the team
