Position Summary
As a Commercial Auto Underwriting Manager, you will lead the commercial underwriting function for non-standard commercial auto business, with responsibility for underwriting strategy, portfolio performance, technical risk oversight, and team leadership.
This role is responsible for driving underwriting profitability through disciplined risk selection, guideline development, operational oversight, and sound portfolio management. The Commercial Underwriting Manager will oversee underwriting staff, evaluate complex commercial auto risks, establish underwriting appetite, and partner cross-functionally to support profitable growth.
This position offers a remote work arrangement within the South region.
Extensive Florida commercial auto underwriting experience is required.
Key Responsibilities
  • Lead commercial underwriting operations and manage underwriting staff performance.
  • Establish and maintain underwriting guidelines defining acceptable classes, restricted risks, and target profitable segments.
  • Develop and manage Florida commercial auto underwriting appetite and eligibility standards.
  • Review, approve, modify, or decline complex fleet and transportation risks.
  • Evaluate risk factors including driver quality, vehicle type, radius of operation, commodity hauled, DOT compliance, loss history, garaging territory, and financial stability.
  • Monitor portfolio concentration by class, territory, and fleet size to ensure balanced risk distribution.
  • Analyze loss trends and portfolio performance to recommend underwriting strategy adjustments.
  • Ensure compliance with Florida regulations and applicable state and federal transportation requirements.
  • Monitor underwriting KPIs, quality standards, and operational performance benchmarks.
  • Partner with claims, actuarial, product, and executive leadership to support profitability initiatives.
  • Provide coaching, technical guidance, and leadership development to underwriting staff.
  • Drive process improvements and operational efficiencies.
Education & Licensing
  • Bachelorโ€™s degree required; Business, Risk Management, Finance, or related field preferred.
  • CPCU, AU, ARM, or other insurance designations a plus.
  • Florida 2-20 License or equivalent preferred.
Skills & Qualifications
  • Extensive commercial auto underwriting experience within property and casualty insurance.
  • Strong knowledge of non-standard commercial auto risk assessment.
  • Proven underwriting leadership and team management experience.
  • Deep understanding of Florida commercial auto underwriting regulations.
  • Strong analytical, decision-making, and communication skills.
  • Ability to manage portfolio profitability and operational performance.
